Michael Carrick's position at Manchester United is hanging by a thread. The 0-3 home defeat against Bournemouth at Old Trafford has ramped up pressure on the manager. Club senior officials are reported to have already discussed his future at Carrington Training Ground. No official decision has been made yet, but speculation over Carrick's potential dismissal is growing rapidly.

Manchester United Chief Executive Omar Berrada and Football Director Jason Wilcox held discussions over Carrick's situation immediately following the Bournemouth defeat on Sunday 25 October. The pair met again at Carrington the following day, with Carrick's future the central point of the meeting.

Carrick arrived at the training complex while Manchester United's U-21 squad were playing a closed-door friendly match against Hull. Wilcox left the premises shortly before Carrick departed.

Manchester United are yet to make any public announcement. Nevertheless, pressure on Carrick continues to mount amid poor match results and the team slipping further away from the top of the league Standings.

From Revival Hero To Criticism Target

This situation is a complete reversal from the early days of Carrick's tenure. Appointed in January 2026 following the departure of Ruben Amorim, the former Red Devils midfielder successfully turned the team's form around and guided Manchester United to a 3rd place finish in the 2025/2026 Premier League.

The club rewarded Carrick's performance with a two-year contract. That trust is now however at risk after Manchester United's form collapsed at the start of the new season.

The Bournemouth loss extends United's poor run of results, coming after they were thrashed 4-1 by Como in the Champions League. Carrick's side have now gone eight consecutive matches without recording a victory.

Their start to the campaign is equally alarming. Manchester United have only won two out of their twelve matches across all competitions. In the English League, collecting just seven points from eight matches marks the club's worst league start since 1986.

This run of poor results has left the Red Devils sat in 16th position, just one single point above the relegation zone. This standing is a far cry from the club's expectations, having finished inside the top three the previous season.

An away fixture against Chelsea on Saturday 31 October comes at an extremely difficult time. Manchester United desperately need a positive result, while Carrick faces one pressing question: does he still retain the backing of the club management?

Eddie Howe And Julian Nagelsmann Emerge As Candidates

With uncertainty surrounding Carrick's future, two names have been linked with the Manchester United manager position. According to ESPN reports, Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann are on the shortlist of potential candidates should Carrick be relieved of his duties.

Both Howe and Nagelsmann remain only potential options for now, as no official decision has been issued by the club.

Carrick has refused to speculate on his own future. Following the Bournemouth defeat, he left the pitch waving towards a group of supporters who were chanting his name.

Inside the stands, Manchester United fans did not reserve their frustration solely for the players and manager. The Glazer family, co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, and the entire INEOS management team including Jason Wilcox also received heavy criticism from the supporters.

Bruno Fernandes Dropped To The Bench, Internal Tensions Surface

Carrick's decision to drop captain Bruno Fernandes to the substitutes bench has further drawn scrutiny to the team's situation. The 32-year old midfielder has failed to replicate the form that saw him win both the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) and Football Writers' Association (FWA) Player of the Year awards last season.

Fernandes had previously publicly questioned Carrick's tactics following the 4-1 defeat against Como. Carrick however insisted that dropping the captain was a purely technical decision, not a disciplinary action. Fernandes did not feature for a single minute during the Bournemouth match.

Another internal issue emerged after Lisandro Martínez was fined and summoned for a formal meeting with club management. The defender had publicly criticised the club hierarchy in an interview following United's defeat against Atletico Madrid.

This series of poor results and growing internal friction has left Carrick in an incredibly precarious position. He is not only tasked with turning around the team's on-pitch performances, but must also deal with supporter anger and uncertainty over whether he still has management's backing.

Manchester United will travel away to face Chelsea in their next English League fixture on Saturday 31 October. After this match the league will pause for the international break, before the Red Devils return to Old Trafford to host AS Roma and Aston Villa.

Time is running out for Carrick to turn this situation around. That said, until an official announcement is made, his future at Old Trafford remains uncertain.
