The 2026 Moto3 Malaysia championship at Sepang International Circuit is heating up, as Veda Ega Pratama and Hakim Danish trade top positions back and forth. This battle between the two young Southeast Asian riders is not just about national pride between Indonesia and Malaysia, but a fight for competitive Standings amid the extremely tight Moto3 class field.
Veda first caught the eye during Friday practice sessions on 30 October 2026. The Honda Team Asia rider posted a lap time of 2:11.519 to claim 3rd position, just 0.092 seconds off session leader David Almansa of Liqui Moly Dynavolt Intact GP, who set a benchmark time of 2:11.427.
Racing in front of his home crowd, Hakim Danish also delivered a strong performance. The AEON Credit-MT Helmets-MSI rider ended the practice session in 4th place with a 2:11.573 lap, a gap of only 0.054 seconds behind Veda.

These results show just how little separates the two riders on Sepang's tarmac. While Veda held the advantage on the first day, it did not take long for Hakim to hit back.
During Saturday FP2 on 31 October, it was Hakim's turn to finish ahead. The Malaysian rider placed 6th overall, while Veda concluded the session in 8th position. David Almansa once again topped the timing sheets, followed by Maximo Quiles and David Munoz.
The competition grew even tighter, with the entire top 10 riders separated by just around half a second in FP2. This dynamic makes it clear that even minor adjustments to bike setup or a single good flying lap can completely reshuffle the order on the timing board.
Veda Holds Standings Advantage
This Sepang battle carries extra weight when considering Veda and Hakim's positions in the 2026 Moto3 championship standings. Heading into the Malaysian round, Veda sits 8th overall with 111 points, with Hakim just behind in 9th place on 103 points.
Veda holds an 8 point lead over his Malaysian rival. This is far from a comfortable margin, meaning the final result at Sepang could easily swap their positions in the championship table.
Their recent form also illustrates this back-and-forth rivalry. At the previous Indonesian Moto3 round at Mandalika, Veda finished 6th while Hakim crossed the line in 14th place.
Veda arrives in Malaysia on a high note, having secured pole position at the Australian round before the Phillip Island race was ultimately cancelled due to severe weather conditions.
Different Paths, Same Qualification Target
Veda earned a major advantage with his 3rd place practice result. This performance guaranteed the Indonesian rider direct entry to Q2, skipping the Q1 knockout round entirely and allowing him to focus fully on securing the best possible starting grid position.
"I'm really happy with how this Weekend has started. The bike has felt perfect right from my very first lap," Veda stated in Honda Team Asia's official press release.
Hakim also secured his automatic Q2 spot via his practice results. His 4th place finish meant the home favourite also avoided Q1, and he showed consistent form by holding 6th position during the FP2 session.
Malaysian national news agency Bernama reported that Hakim stated he has finally regained his confidence and feel with the bike, after struggling through the previous two or three championship rounds.
He is still working to refine his bike setup, with a particular focus on improving grip through Sepang's high-speed corners.
Qualifying will present the next chance for both riders to measure themselves against one another. Given the tiny gaps seen across all practice sessions, both Veda and Hakim have a realistic shot at securing a front row start.
Hakim will have the extra energy of home crowd support behind him, but Veda has already demonstrated consistent raw pace from the very first day of Running.
This head-to-head battle is shaping up to be one of the most compelling storylines of the round, especially as Sepang's final results will have a direct impact on both riders' end of season championship positions.
The 2026 Moto3 Malaysia schedule continues with qualifying sessions on Saturday 31 October. The main race will be held on Sunday 1 November, consisting of 15 full laps around Sepang International Circuit.
