Choosing a Holiday destination can now start with just a few seconds of video. Beach views, the atmosphere of a corner city café, or mountain trail footage appearing on social media can instantly spark the desire to visit that exact location.
This phenomenon illustrates the shift in how Young Generations find Travel inspiration. Generation Z no longer relies solely on recommendations from family, friends, or travel agencies. Digital platforms have become a core part of every step, from discovering destinations to Putting together Holiday Plans.
TUI Musement research published in August 2026 supports this pattern. A survey of travellers across Spain, Italy and the United Kingdom found TikTok is the primary travel inspiration source for 48 percent of Gen Z respondents. This figure outpaces family and friend recommendations, which came in at 43 percent.

Social media influence does not stop at inspiration—it extends right through to the booking stage. 50 percent of Gen Z respondents in this study reported having booked a trip or travel activity directly after seeing posts or Viral Videos. Across all age groups, over 43 percent of respondents stated they had made bookings after viewing viral content.
Additional findings from TUI Musement also show social media shapes traveller behaviour after arrival at a destination. 39 percent of respondents reported visiting tourist locations primarily just to take photos or record video.
Meanwhile, 37 percent admitted they will sometimes choose an Instagram-famous spot over a lesser known, Alternative Destination.
Parallel findings have been observed in research focused on Indonesian Gen Z, in the study titled How Short-Form Travel Videos on TikTok Drive Intention Through Presence, Enjoyment, Flow Experience in Indonesian Gen Z.
Published 21 July 2026 in the Journal of Islamic Economics and Business, this research surveyed 237 Gen Z TikTok users.
The results found that the experience of consuming short travel videos correlates directly with intention to visit domestic destinations. Deep immersive engagement while watching, referred to as flow experience, was the strongest driver of visit desire, followed by enjoyment of the content and the sense of being virtually present at the location.
The study also noted that Indonesian Gen Z allocate approximately 29 percent of their income to travel activities. This finding underlines the importance of the youth market for the travel industry, though it is noted these results are drawn from a TikTok user sample and cannot be automatically generalised to the entire Indonesian Gen Z population.
After discovering a destination via social media, young people now have a second tool to refine their travel plans: Artificial Intelligence, or AI.
This technology can be used to explore alternative destinations, compare accommodation options, plot travel routes, and build custom itineraries adjusted for available time and budget.
2026 Booking.com research cited by Statista on 28 July 2026 found 69 percent of Gen Z respondents use generative AI both when planning trips and while travelling.
This is the highest adoption rate across all age groups. For comparison, usage sits at 64 percent for Millennials, 41 percent for Gen X, and just 11 percent for Baby Boomers.
This survey covered 32,800 people across 34 countries who had confirmed travel plans for 2026. The results demonstrate AI is becoming an established habit for Young Travellers, used for researching destinations, comparing options, and obtaining on-the-ground guidance during trips.
Separate research published August 2026 by Mindtrip in partnership with Sabre, Sojern and MMGY Travel Intelligence found 54 percent of respondents have already used AI to plan travel.
75 percent stated they intend to use the technology for future trips.
This study surveyed 1,006 travellers based in the United States. It found 63 percent of Gen Z respondents reported using AI assistants just as frequently as social media for travel planning.
Across all respondents, 40 percent had even discovered new travel destinations directly through AI recommendations.
AI is utilised for a wide range of travel needs: 42 percent of respondents use the technology to look up itinerary information, while 32 percent use it to compare Flights, hotels and tour packages. An identical 32 percent also use AI to generate new destination ideas.
These two digital channels serve distinct but complementary roles. Social media sparks the initial desire to travel through visual content and shared user experiences. AI then takes that inspiration and turns it into structured, practical travel plans.
This behavioural shift presents clear opportunities for the Tourism Industry. Destination managers, accommodation providers and activity operators will need to prioritise the quality of their digital information, not just chase viral content popularity.
Clear, accessible details on access routes, pricing, facilities and on-location experiences must be made easy for potential travellers to find.
That said, social media popularity of a destination does not always reflect real world conditions. Videos will almost always show only the most flattering angles of a location, while AI generated information may also be out of date regarding latest prices or schedules.
For this reason, travellers should always cross-verify information using official operator websites, transport providers, hotel pages and official booking platforms. Technology can make travel planning far more convenient, but final decisions still require human judgement.
