Mikel Arteta expressed his pride after Arsenal ended their 14-year wait for a victory at Anfield. The Gunners defeated Liverpool 1-0 in the ongoing 2026/27 English Premier League fixture on Sunday, 1 November 2026.

This away victory at Liverpool's home ground marks a major milestone for Arsenal, while also strengthening their position in this season's title race.

Arsenal secured all three points via Kai Havertz's solo goal in the 16th minute. The German forward finished off a low cross from Declan Rice, after Liverpool's defensive line failed to anticipate The Gunners' attacking move.

That goal became the match decider for the fixture held at Anfield Stadium. Liverpool pushed to close the deficit, but could not find the back of the net despite mounting repeated periods of pressure.

Across the full match, The Reds recorded 17 total shots. None of these efforts landed on target against David Raya. Florian Wirtz struck the crossbar with a free kick, while Alexis Mac Allister wasted a golden opportunity with his headed effort.

Arteta stated this victory carries special meaning for every member of the club, given how long Arsenal had gone without claiming a league win away at Anfield.

"For 14 years, every person that has been part of this football club has waited for a win here. That is an incredibly long time," stated Arteta after the match, as quoted from the official match report.

The Spanish head coach also noted that their midweek Carabao Cup defeat to Fleetwood Town actually acted as extra motivation for the squad.

According to Arteta, that poor result made the squad arrive at Anfield with greater spirit, hunger and belief to secure victory.

Arsenal Displayed Solid Defence At Anfield

Arsenal's victory was not only determined by Kai Havertz's clinical finishing of chances. Discipline and cohesion across the defensive line also became a key factor in neutralising Liverpool's pressure.

After taking the early lead, Arsenal maintained structured play and restricted the movement space of the home side's players. While Liverpool did control spells of the match, they struggled to find gaps to penetrate The Gunners' defence.

The record of 17 shots without a single effort on target demonstrates how effective Arsenal's defence performed during this fixture.

Declan Rice also highlighted the collective strength of his side when withstanding pressure at Anfield. He acknowledged that Liverpool built sustained waves of attacks, especially during the first half.

However, per Rice, defensive cohesion and unity across the entire squad was the key that allowed Arsenal to hold their lead until the final whistle.

This victory also extends Arsenal's impressive defensive run. The Gunners have now recorded six clean sheets from nine Premier League matches this season.

Arsenal Cement Their Place At The Top Of The Standings

The three points collected from Anfield have solidified Arsenal's position at the top of the provisional 2026/27 Premier League table.

Mikel Arteta's squad now have 24 points from nine matches. They hold a three point lead over Manchester City in second place, who dropped to 21 points following a defeat against Brighton.

Meanwhile Liverpool remain stuck in fifth position with 15 points, nine points behind league leaders Arsenal.

This victory was far more than just breaking the long Anfield drought. This result also serves as a strong statement that Arsenal have the consistency, mentality and defensive quality to compete seriously for this season's Premier League title.
