Mexico City – Andrea Kimi Antonelli has written new history in Formula 1 (F1). The Mercedes driver has officially been crowned the 2026 F1 World Champion after finishing third at the Mexico Grand Prix, held at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez Circuit in Mexico City on Sunday (1/11/2026) local time, or early Monday (2/11/2026) Western Indonesian Time.
This title makes Antonelli the youngest ever World Champion in the entire history of Formula 1. The Italian driver claimed his maiden world title at just 20 years old, breaking the long-standing record held by Sebastian Vettel, who became the youngest champion at 23 years old back in 2010.
This achievement is made even more significant as Antonelli ends Italy's decades-long wait for another F1 World Champion. He becomes only the third Italian driver ever to win this title, following Giuseppe Farina in 1950, and Alberto Ascari who won back-to-back titles in 1952 and 1953.

Standings updated after the Mexico Grand Prix show Antonelli has accumulated 380 championship points. This total cannot be matched by any of his rivals, meaning he has secured the World Championship title with four full race rounds still remaining in the season.
Max Verstappen (Red Bull Racing) sits second in the standings with 261 points, while Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari occupies third place with 259 points.
Verstappen Wins Tight Battle Against Hamilton
Amidst Antonelli locking up the world championship title, Max Verstappen took race victory at the 2026 Mexico Grand Prix.
The Red Bull Racing driver completed the 71-lap race with a finishing time of 2 hours 20 minutes 28.772 seconds. Verstappen crossed the line just 0.799 seconds ahead of Hamilton, who took second place.
Antonelli completed the podium, finishing 4.006 seconds behind the race winner.
The race was closely contested right from the opening lap. Hamilton, who started from pole position, initially held the lead. However, an early internal battle with his Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc shifted the entire race dynamic.
Leclerc briefly overtook Hamilton with a manoeuvre at the first corner. However, the Monegasque driver ran off track during the move, and stewards ruled he had gained an unfair advantage from this action.
Verstappen capitalised on this situation to move up into second place, dropping Hamilton down to third position.
Race stewards subsequently handed Leclerc a 5-second time penalty for leaving the circuit and gaining an advantage. This penalty further derailed Ferrari's efforts to hold the race lead.
Verstappen then moved into first place, and worked to maintain his gap as Hamilton continued to apply constant pressure from behind.
Bottas Crash Triggers Red Flag
Further drama unfolded when Valtteri Bottas suffered a heavy crash on lap 42.
This incident first saw the Safety Car deployed. However, significant damage to the circuit barriers meant race officials raised the red flag to temporarily halt the Grand Prix completely for repairs.
Once the track was declared safe, racing resumed. Verstappen retained the lead, while Hamilton continued to hunt for an opening to take the win.
Leclerc ran behind the two leading drivers. Meanwhile, Antonelli fought to hold his podium position, having briefly led the race earlier thanks to a perfectly timed pit stop strategy.
Another incident disrupted the race on lap 59, when Oscar Piastri and Arvid Lindblad made wheel-to-wheel contact while fighting for position. The collision sent Lindblad's car off track and hard into the barriers at Turn 2.
The Safety Car was deployed once again to neutralise the field.
Verstappen handled the final restart perfectly. Once full racing resumed, the Dutch driver held off Hamilton's persistent charge all the way to the chequered flag.
This victory marked Verstappen's third race win of the 2026 season.
Piastri Penalty Alters Final Race Classification
The official results of the Mexico Grand Prix were revised after stewards issued post-race rulings.
Oscar Piastri, who had originally crossed the line in 7th place, was handed a 10-second time penalty after being found fully responsible for the collision with Lindblad. This penalty saw the McLaren driver lose all championship points from this round, dropping him down to 15th place in the final published F1 classification.
Gabriel Bortoleto driving for Audi was one of the drivers who gained positions as a result of this revised result.
This penalty ruling served as a reminder that the final race classification does not always match the order drivers cross the finish line.
Critically, these changes had no impact on the World Championship standings. Antonelli remained confirmed as the 2026 F1 champion courtesy of his third place finish.
Four Rounds Remain, Antonelli's Title Unassailable
Antonelli securing the World Championship title this early in the season marks a major milestone for the Mercedes factory team.
With his 380 point haul, Antonelli holds an unassailable 119 point advantage over second placed Verstappen. This gap cannot be closed over the remaining four races of the season.
Attention will now turn to the battle for second place in the Drivers' Championship, as well as the tight fight for the Constructors' World Championship title.
Mercedes still have work to do to secure the constructors trophy. Following the Mexico Grand Prix, the German team sits on 630 points, holding a lead over second placed Ferrari who have scored 504 points so far this season.
The final four rounds of the 2026 season will be held in Brazil, Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi.
For Antonelli however, his place in Formula 1 history is already secured. At just 20 years old, the Mercedes Young Driver has achieved a feat previously only accomplished by a select group of legends in global Motorsport.
