Italy has once again etched its name into Formula 1 history after Andrea Kimi Antonelli secured the 2026 World Championship title. This victory for the Mercedes driver brings an end to the nation's 73-year wait for another world Champion in Car Racing, the most prestigious Motorsport competition in the world.
Antonelli sealed the world championship title after finishing third at the Mexican Grand Prix. This result was sufficient to clinch the crown, even with four race rounds still remaining in the 2026 season.
This achievement marks a historic moment for Italy. Before Antonelli, only two Italian drivers had ever won the Formula 1 World Championship: Giuseppe Farina and Alberto Ascari.

Farina became the first Italian to claim the Formula 1 title during the championship's inaugural 1950 season. Competing for Alfa Romeo, he outperformed every rival to take the world championship crown.
Two years later, Alberto Ascari carried Italy to the top of the sport. This Ferrari driver won the world championship in 1952, then successfully defended his title again in the 1953 season.
Since Ascari's 1953 victory, Italy had not produced another Formula 1 world champion. While numerous prominent drivers have represented the nation over the decades, none had managed to end this long, unbroken wait.
Now Antonelli stands as the successor to Farina and Ascari's legacy. Born in Bologna, this driver has returned the Italian flag to the very peak of the competition after more than seven decades.

Antonelli's triumph is made even more remarkable by the fact he won this title with Mercedes, not Ferrari - the marque long synonymous with Italy that holds one of the longest and most iconic histories in Formula 1.
At the Mexican Grand Prix, Max Verstappen took race victory, with Lewis Hamilton crossing the line in second place. Antonelli finished third, enough to secure his maiden world championship title.
Per Reuters reports, Antonelli held an uncatchable lead in the championship Standings following this race. He locked up the title with a 119-point advantage over his closest rival.
This crown places Antonelli within the exclusive group of Italian drivers to win the Formula 1 World Championship, following the path forged by Farina and Ascari who wrote their names into the sport's history during its earliest founding era.
This success also stands as a major milestone for Mercedes. The German team has delivered an Italian driver to the Formula 1 world championship throne at the conclusion of this 73-year national wait.
With this achievement, Antonelli is not only celebrating his first ever championship title. He has also opened an entirely new chapter in Italy's long, rich history within Formula 1.
