Manchester United are currently enduring one of the most difficult periods in the club's history. Their 0-2 defeat away to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday 31 October 2026 has extended the Red Devils' winless run to nine matches across all competitions. This result also equals the club's worst losing streak recorded in the last 42 years.

This run represents a major blow for Michael Carrick. The English head coach is now under severe pressure after failing to pull Manchester United out of this slump that has now stretched over multiple weeks.

According to Opta statistics, Manchester United last recorded a longer winless run back in September 1984, when they went 10 matches without victory. This makes the nine game barren spell during the 2026/2027 campaign the club's worst run of form in four full decades.

Across their last nine fixtures, United have registered three Draws and six defeats. The loss against Chelsea is the latest in a string of disappointing results that also includes defeats to Como and Bournemouth.

The situation is further complicated as Manchester United have also been knocked out of the Carabao Cup, and are yet to show consistent form in either domestic or European competition.

Chelsea Defeat Increases Pressure On Carrick

The match against Chelsea had actually offered early hope for Manchester United. In the first half, Carrick's side created multiple clear chances and mounted solid resistance against the home side.

However, the game shifted completely after Morgan Rogers scored Chelsea's opening goal in the 50th minute. The attacker broke through United's defensive line before converting a clinical finish to put The Blues ahead.

Disaster struck for Manchester United in the 63rd minute, when Lisandro Martinez was shown a straight red card. Following a VAR review, the referee awarded Chelsea a penalty and dismissed the Argentine defender for his foul on Wesley Fofana.

Cole Palmer stepped up as penalty taker and converted successfully one minute later. This goal confirmed Chelsea's 2-0 victory, and extended Manchester United's ongoing crisis.

Speaking after the full time whistle, Carrick admitted his side failed to maintain their performance after the half time break.

"We could not produce any quality Football in the second half. We should have been leading at half time. Everything was going as positively as we had planned. We looked very dangerous going forward."

Carrick also highlighted how the match unravelled immediately after his side conceded the first goal.

"We completely lost control of the game in the second half. That opening goal was entirely avoidable. Then the penalty made the situation far more difficult for us. We are under enormous pressure right now."

Michael Carrick's Future Remains Uncertain

This poor run of results has placed Carrick's future at Old Trafford under intense public scrutiny. Consecutive defeats against Bournemouth and Chelsea have significantly ramped up pressure on the former Manchester United midfielder.

Prior to this, Carrick was already in a precarious position following Manchester United's 0-3 home defeat against Bournemouth at Old Trafford. That result extended their winless run to eight matches and triggered widespread speculation over an imminent managerial change.

Despite this, Carrick remains in his post for now, after club executives held internal discussions regarding his future. Reuters confirmed that Carrick still led first team training as normal following these talks on 27 October 2026.

After the Chelsea defeat, Carrick also stated he remains confident he will be in charge for Manchester United's upcoming fixture against AS Roma in the Champions League next Tuesday.

However, reporting from The Athletic which has been widely cited across British media states Manchester United will conduct a full formal review of Carrick's position ahead of the November international break. This means the club's next two matches are set to be critical for the manager's future.

Carrick retains support from sections of the fanbase due to his legacy as a former club player. Even after the Bournemouth defeat, groups of supporters applauded the manager at full time, while the playing squad received widespread criticism.

Even so, this goodwill has not been enough to resolve Manchester United's core issue: Match Results that continue to fall well below expectations.

Will The Next Two Matches Decide Carrick's Fate?

Manchester United now need an immediate response to end this negative run. Their upcoming Champions League match against AS Roma is the first opportunity for Carrick to prove his side is still capable of turning their form around.

After that, all focus will turn to their final domestic fixture before the November international break. The outcome of these two matches will directly influence the club board's final decision on the future of Carrick's project at Old Trafford.

For Manchester United, the challenge extends far beyond simply ending this nine match winless run. The club must also rediscover the on-pitch stability and winning mentality that has long been part of their identity.

For Carrick meanwhile, time to reverse the situation is running out. The last comparable run of poor form back in 1984 now stands as a stark reminder of just how deep the current crisis at the Red Devils has become.
