Interestingly, travel to Semarang itself is also closely linked to railway transport. The city's two main stations, Semarang Tawang Station and Semarang Poncol Station, served millions of passengers between January and August 2026.

Semarang Tawang Station recorded 1,262,315 total arriving and departing passengers during this period: 628,946 departing passengers and 633,369 arriving passengers.

Meanwhile Semarang Poncol Station served 1,867,005 total arriving and departing passengers, consisting of 902,984 departures and 964,021 arrivals.

Operations at these two stations also reflect the high public mobility travelling to and from Semarang.

KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba stated that heritage destinations such as Lawang Sewu form an integral part of travel itineraries for people visiting Semarang.

"Railway travel holds close connections to the development of cities across Indonesia, including Semarang. Lawang Sewu is one of the heritage sites that preserves the full story of Indonesia's railway journey from the past up to the present day. Visitors can learn this history through the building itself, displayed collections, and all information provided on site," stated Anne.

Based on data from the Semarang City Central Statistics Agency (BPS), total tourist arrivals in Semarang reached 7,345,373 people in 2024, consisting of 7,321,077 domestic tourists and 24,296 international tourists.

This data illustrates the substantial potential of Semarang as a travel destination, including for historical and heritage tourism.
