The 2026 MotoGP World Championship title battle has entered a critical phase, after Aprilia Racing rider Jorge Martin crashed during the Australian MotoGP sprint race, placing his eligibility to compete in the next championship round at risk. Ducati Lenovo Team Manager Davide Tardozzi assessed that Martin made a fatal error, while Aprilia's camp remains hopeful the rider will be able to contest the Malaysian MotoGP round at Sepang Circuit on 1 November.

Martin crashed on the eighth lap of the Phillip Island sprint race on Saturday 24 October. The incident left Martin with a fractured hand, forcing him to withdraw from the Australian MotoGP main race. That main event was ultimately postponed shortly afterwards due to dense track fog.

This crash is a devastating setback for Martin, who had been locked in a tight head-to-head title fight with Marc Marquez. The situation also hands Marquez the opportunity to extend his championship lead if Martin is ruled unfit to race in the upcoming round.

Davide Tardozzi States Jorge Martin Committed A Fatal Error

Ducati Lenovo Team Manager Davide Tardozzi acknowledged Martin possessed the raw pace to challenge Marc Marquez all the way to the final round of the season. However, the mistake that caused his Phillip Island crash now has the potential to completely alter the trajectory of the title fight.

"Martin made an error, but he is incredibly, incredibly competitive... I truly believed this would go down as a battle all the way to the chequered flag of the final round between Marc Marquez and Martin. Unfortunately, that mistake happened," Tardozzi remarked in comments published by official MotoGP media on Tuesday.

Prior to the crash, Martin was established as Marquez's closest title rival. Official championship Standings show Marquez currently tops the table with 365 points, holding only a ten point advantage over Martin.

While Martin's crash creates a favourable position for Ducati, Tardozzi has warned his squad against underestimating Aprilia Racing, stressing the championship battle remains far from decided.

"We know our opposition is very strong. They have two riders in contention for the world title. They have our full respect, we understand perfectly the capability they hold both as a factory manufacturer and as a rider line-up," Tardozzi stated.

He also reaffirmed confidence in Ducati's position, particularly with Marc Marquez currently leading the championship standings.

"At the end of the day though, this is Ducati. We are always in this fight, and we have Marc Marquez on our side," the Italian team manager added.

Aprilia Hopeful Jorge Martin Will Attend Sepang Round

Within the Aprilia Racing camp, the team remains optimistic Martin can return to action. Team Principal Massimo Rivola stated his immediate priority is to at least have his star rider join the team for the Malaysian MotoGP weekend, even if medical clearance to actually race is not yet guaranteed.

"This is very, very difficult right now. All I hope for is that we will see Martin at Sepang, even just to be there alongside the team," Rivola told official MotoGP media on Tuesday.

Rivola acknowledged Martin's campaign with Aprilia has been plagued by injury setbacks and misfortune. That said, he expressed relief that the rider only sustained a hand fracture from the high-speed impact.

"It feels like luck has never been on the side of Jorge and Aprilia this season. The only piece of good luck here is that it was only a fractured bone, nothing more serious. This is not drama, that is just the reality of the situation," he explained.

Martin will not travel back to Spain for further injury treatment. However, Rivola is still unable to confirm whether the rider nicknamed 'The Martinator' will be cleared to compete at Sepang. Aprilia will wait for daily updates on Martin's physical recovery before making any final decision on his participation.

"We have not had good fortune with Martin this season, but we will absolutely not surrender, not right up until the final lap of the final round," Rivola stated.

Martin's condition will be the dominant talking point in the build-up to the Malaysian MotoGP. With such a narrow points gap separating the title contenders, every single race result will shape the final outcome of this season's world championship battle.
