Aston Villa successfully defeated Manchester City 2-1 in the eighth matchweek of the 2026/2027 English Premier League at Villa Park, Birmingham, Saturday 24 October 2026. Nicolas Jackson emerged as the hero for the home side after scoring both of their goals.

This result ended Manchester City's perfect winning run that saw them take maximum points from their opening seven Premier League fixtures this season. The Citizens still sit at the top of the Standings with 21 points, but their lead is now reduced to just three points over second-placed Arsenal, who are yet to play their match against Everton.

Meanwhile, the three earned points moved Aston Villa up to 6th position in the provisional league table with a total of 11 points.

Jackson put Aston Villa ahead just six minutes into the match. The goal came from a misplaced pass and loss of possession by Marc Guehi. Home captain John McGinn intercepted the ball before playing a through ball to Jackson, who finished the chance cleanly.

Manchester City attempted to respond by increasing their attacking pressure. Iliman Ndiaye created a goalscoring chance in the 13th minute, but Aston Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki produced a good save to deny him. Another threat came from Rayan Cherki in the 21st minute, but his strike was also stopped by Suzuki.

Ndiaye got another clear opportunity later in the first half, only for his shot to hit the goal post. By the half-time break, Manchester City had failed to find an equaliser, with Aston Villa still holding a 1-0 lead.

After the restart, Manchester City finally levelled the score in the 52nd minute. A cross from Ndiaye was met by a powerful header from Erling Haaland, bringing the scoreline to 1-1.

This equaliser was short lived however. Aston Villa retook the lead in the 60th minute as Jackson scored his second goal of the fixture.

The goal was created by substitute Ibrahim Mbaye, who played a pulled-back cross from the right flank. Jackson connected with the delivery with a driven shot that Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma could not reach.

Trailing 1-2, Manchester City threw everything forward to salvage a result, mounting constant pressure on the home defence. Jeremy Doku unleashed a curling shot from the left wing, but the effort did not result in a goal.

Haaland threatened again late in the match with another headed attempt. However Ian Maatsen reacted quickly to clear the ball off the line before it crossed the goal, snuffing out the late equaliser chance.

Aston Villa successfully defended their 2-1 lead until the final whistle. This victory also extends their strong home record against Manchester City, marking four consecutive league home wins over the side.
