Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappé has suffered a major off-field setback after three Chinese companies terminated their commercial partnerships with him. Dongpeng, Mengniu, and Milkground took this firm decision following controversy over a video clip of the Los Blancos star commenting on a meme that overlaid his face onto the body of Mao Zedong.

This case demonstrates How quickly social media controversy can escalate into a business crisis for elite global footballers. Mbappé is not merely one of Europe's top players, but also a key marketing asset for multiple international brands operating within the Chinese market.

The controversy originated from a clipped interview segment from the social media programme The Bridge. In the footage, Mbappé discussed the meme placing his face on the body of Mao Zedong, founding father of the People's Republic of China, and referred to the figure in the image as "China's dictator".

While the video triggered widespread public reaction, its authenticity has not been independently verified. Regardless, commercial repercussions have already emerged, with multiple brands announcing the end of their agreements with the France national team player.

Dongpeng, Mengniu and Milkground Terminate Partnerships

Dongpeng Beverage Group was among the first companies to announce the cut ties. The drinks manufacturer had previously featured Mbappé in marketing campaigns for its electrolyte drinks, including AI-generated advertising content.

"Our company firmly opposes and will never tolerate any behaviour that offends national sentiment," stated an official release from Dongpeng, as quoted by Channel NewsAsia.

Identical action was taken by Mengniu, one of China's largest dairy producers, and Milkground, a major domestic cheese manufacturer. Both firms also publicly announced an immediate end to their partnership contracts with Mbappé after the controversy surfaced.

No official data has been released regarding the total combined value of the cancelled agreements. For this reason, the exact scale of direct financial loss Mbappé will face from these terminations cannot yet be confirmed.

Even so, losing three major commercial partners at once risks significantly eroding Mbappé's market appeal in one of the world's largest consumer economies. The damage may also extend to future endorsement opportunities, as other brands will now reconsider the player as a potential brand ambassador.

Apology Has Not Resolved The Controversy

Mbappé subsequently issued a formal apology published in French, Mandarin and English. He acknowledged his comments were inappropriate, and stated he understood his words had caused distress to many people in China and ethnic Chinese communities worldwide.

"My remark was unwise. I now understand that this statement has hurt many people in China and Chinese communities across the globe. I apologise to every person who was offended by what I said," Mbappé stated, in remarks quoted by Channel NewsAsia.

Chinese government officials acknowledged the apology publicly. However this response has not immediately restored Mbappé's commercial agreements, nor reversed the damage done to the player's public reputation and digital presence within China.

This case stands as a reminder for globally recognised athletes that on-field success and popularity provides no automatic protection for their off-field reputation.

For Mbappé, the challenges ahead go far beyond maintaining match performance for Real Madrid: he must now work to rebuild trust with Business partners and supporters inside China.
