Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé is facing an off-field reputational crisis after a joke regarding a Mao Zedong meme sparked widespread public outrage across China. Within a very short timeframe, three major corporations terminated all commercial partnerships with the French National Team Captain. Meanwhile, China Media Group (CMG) — the state-owned media conglomerate operating the CCTV broadcast network — suspended all La Liga match transmissions.

This controversy originated from a clipped interview segment for the social media program The Bridge. In the footage, Mbappé discussed an internet meme where his face had been edited onto the body of Mao Zedong, the revolutionary founding leader of the People's Republic of China.

When asked which internet meme he found most striking, Mbappé referred to the figure in the image as "the Chinese dictator". While he did not explicitly name Mao, the visual reference clearly depicted the former Chinese head of state.

The video triggered intense backlash, as Mao Zedong holds a deeply significant standing in China's national history and collective identity. What began as an offhand comment from a professional footballer has escalated into commercial fallout, club reputational damage, and threats to Spanish Football's Business ties with the Chinese market.

Three Chinese Sponsors Terminate Partnerships

The swiftest initial reactions came from the commercial sector. Chinese beverage manufacturer Dongpeng was among the first companies to announce it was ending its collaboration with Mbappé. The brand had previously featured the footballer in marketing campaigns for its electrolyte drink line, including artificial intelligence powered advertising content.

"Our company firmly opposes, and will not tolerate, any behaviour that offends national sentiment," read Dongpeng's official public statement.

Identical action was taken by Mengniu — one of China's largest dairy producers — and cheese manufacturer Milkground. Both firms announced the immediate termination of their partnership agreements with Mbappé as the controversy spread.

For Mbappé, losing three commercial partners simultaneously delivers a major blow to his public Profile in one of the world's largest consumer markets. Prior to this incident, his likeness was used across promotional material for product lines ranging from beverages, dairy goods to cheese products.

None of the three companies have disclosed the exact value of their terminated contracts. As such, the full scale of Mbappé's financial losses cannot yet be confirmed.

Mbappé's online presence in China has also been restricted. His Xiaohongshu account has been limited, while Weibo users began receiving platform notifications that they could no longer follow his profile due to violations of platform usage rules.

CCTV Suspends La Liga Broadcasts

The fallout did not remain limited to Mbappé's personal sponsorship deals. State broadcaster China Media Group, which operates CCTV, officially suspended all live and recorded La Liga match broadcasts.

This decision extended the impact of the controversy across the entire Spanish football industry. La Liga has long placed high strategic priority on maintaining its international reach and commercial broadcast partnerships, including the vast Chinese market.

The broadcast suspension will cut off regular access for Chinese fans to matches in the league Mbappé competes in. Real Madrid has also come under public scrutiny, as Mbappé is one of the club's marquee players and a major global commercial asset.

No official figures have been released regarding potential broadcast rights losses or total financial impact. Regardless, this incident has demonstrated how reputational risk surrounding a single player can spill over to affect their entire club and the entire league they compete in.

Mbappé Issues Apology In Three Languages

As public anger continued to mount, Mbappé published an official apology statement written in French, Mandarin Chinese and English on Tuesday, 27 October 2026.

He acknowledged his comment was inappropriate, and stated he understood his words had caused hurt to many people within China and Chinese diaspora communities worldwide.

"My comment was unwise. I now understand that these words have hurt many people in China and Chinese communities across the globe. I apologise to everyone who was offended by what I said," Mbappé stated, as quoted by Channel NewsAsia.

The Chinese government officially acknowledged Mbappé's apology. Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Guo Jiakun addressed the matter during a regular press conference on Wednesday, 28 October 2026.

However, the apology has not ended the controversy. Critical commentary continues to spread across Chinese social media platforms, while the suspension of sponsorship deals and La Liga broadcasts remains fully in effect.

Real Madrid And La Liga Intervene

Mounting pressure over Mbappé's comments also drew formal responses from Real Madrid and La Liga. The Madrid club issued its own public apology to the people of China on Wednesday 28 October 2026, in response to the incident involving their player.

Real Madrid also endorsed Mbappé's apology, and publicly affirmed that the player expresses sincere regret over his statement.

La Liga President Javier Tebas also moved to de-escalate tensions. It was confirmed that Tebas held a formal meeting with Yao Jing, Chinese Ambassador to Spain, to discuss the fallout from the controversy and work towards a resolution.

Tebas reaffirmed that China remains a core strategic partner for La Liga. He stated his hope that this isolated individual incident would not damage the long-standing relationship between the two parties, nor disrupt the experience for millions of Chinese football fans.

"We remain committed to working to ensure that this isolated incident does not undermine all the important progress we have built together, or impact the millions of Chinese fans that follow our competition. China is, and will remain, a strategic partner for La Liga," Tebas stated, as reported by Channel NewsAsia.

The responses from Real Madrid and La Liga underscore the enormous commercial stakes at play. Amid fierce global competition for audience attention, maintaining positive relations with the Chinese market is a core pillar of Spanish football's international business strategy.

Why Did The Mao Zedong Joke Trigger Such A Strong Reaction?

Mao Zedong is the central figure of modern Chinese history, and the founder of the People's Republic of China established in 1949. He retains a highly prominent position in the country's official national narrative, even though his leadership legacy is also associated with controversial policies and humanitarian tragedies, most notably the mass famine that occurred during the Great Leap Forward campaign.

Due to this historic and political status, dismissive or mocking remarks about Mao are widely perceived within China as an insult to the country's national symbols. What may be considered harmless internet humour in one country can carry drastically different meaning when it touches on the history and collective identity of another society.

Mbappé's case highlights the unique challenges faced by Public Figures with a global audience. An offhand comment can spread across international borders within moments, while the resulting damage to consumer trust, sponsorships and business partnerships can persist for far longer.

This controversy represents a major test for Mbappé, Real Madrid and La Liga as they work to rebuild trust with the Chinese public. Apology statements have been issued, but repairing damaged reputations and commercial relationships will require far more than just formal public remarks.
