The title battle between Marc Marquez and Jorge Martin for the 2026 MotoGP World Championship has entered a new phase at Sepang Circuit. However, the first free practice session (FP1) of MotoGP Malaysia on Friday painted a starkly contrasting picture for the two championship contenders.

Marquez demonstrated outright dominance with Ducati Lenovo. The Spanish rider set a fastest lap time of 1 minute 58.912 seconds, and remained the only competitor to break under the 1 minute 59 second barrier.

Martin meanwhile continued to struggle finding optimal race pace, only managing 20th position out of 22 total entrants.

The Aprilia Racing rider is making his return to the track after suffering a fracture to his right wrist.

While FP1 results do not yet dictate the outcome of the full weekend, this session served as an early indicator for both riders. Marquez arrives with proven raw speed, while Martin remains in the process of rebuilding competitive form following his injury.

Marquez Leads By Almost Half A Second

Marquez delivered a confident performance right from the start of the session, even with Sepang's track surface still damp after heavy rainfall the previous day. He set his benchmark lap and pulled clear of the entire field by a significant margin.

Marco Bezzecchi of Aprilia Racing and Pedro Acosta of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing finished as the closest challengers. Both riders recorded an identical time of 1:59.386, 0.474 seconds adrift of Marquez.

This advantage underlines Marquez's readiness ahead of the 19th round of the 2026 MotoGP championship. Nicknamed 'The Baby Alien', the rider also secured an early psychological edge by topping the timing sheets straight from the opening session.

KTM showed strong form at Sepang. The Austrian manufacturer placed three riders inside the top five: Acosta in 3rd, Enea Bastianini in 4th, and Brad Binder in 5th position.

Bastianini posted a lap time of 1:59.688, 0.776 seconds behind Marquez, with Binder following shortly after at a 0.825 second gap.

Further down the order, Franco Morbidelli took 6th place, followed by Alex Marquez in 7th and Johann Zarco in 8th. Fabio Di Giannantonio finished 9th, while rookie rider Diogo Moreira rounded out the top 10.

All focus remained fixed on Martin. The reigning 2024 MotoGP World Champion is making his competitive return following his right wrist fracture, with his physical condition set to be a critical factor for this Sepang round.

Across FP1, Martin completed just 12 laps over two separate runs out on track. His best lap time was 2:00.747, a full 1.835 seconds slower than Marquez.

20th place is far from an ideal result for Martin, especially as he chases the world championship title. This result must however be viewed within the context of his ongoing physical recovery process.

Martin was cleared fit to continue the event following a post-FP1 medical evaluation. This ruling keeps him in contention to improve his performance over the remaining sessions.

10 Point Gap Heats Up The Title Fight

The rivalry between Marquez and Martin is the central narrative of MotoGP Malaysia 2026. Only 10 points separate the pair in the championship Standings, with Marquez currently holding the lead.

This tight margin means every session at Sepang carries huge weight. Marquez will aim to protect his advantage while avoiding costly errors, while Martin will need to maximise every minute on track to close the gap.

For Martin, his biggest challenge is not just beating Marquez, but confirming his injured wrist can withstand the full physical demands of race pace. Conversely, Marquez holds a clear opportunity to extend his championship lead if he can maintain this consistent form.

FP1 is only the first step. The real battle remains wide open, with all attention now turned to how Martin can recover his speed, and how Marquez will respond across the remaining sessions at Sepang.
