Manchester United manager Michael Carrick is facing a major critical challenge ahead of Manchester United's fixture against Chelsea this weekend. Amid mounting pressure following a run of poor results, the former Red Devils midfielder's match preparations have been disrupted by fitness problems affecting multiple key first-team players.

Carrick's position as Manchester United head coach is now under heavy public scrutiny. The club board has continued to grant him time to lead the squad, but this upcoming match against Chelsea is expected to act as the deciding factor for his tenure at Old Trafford.

Pressure has continued to escalate as United remain in an unsafe league position. The Red Devils currently sit 16th on the table with 7 points, holding just a single point advantage over clubs inside the relegation zone. A defeat against Chelsea risks pushing the situation into crisis, both for Carrick individually and the entire squad.

However, Carrick cannot prepare for this fixture with a full strength squad. Manuel Ugarte, Benjamin Sesko, Patrick Dorgu and Luke Shaw are all still undergoing injury rehabilitation, with no official confirmation available regarding their availability for selection.

This situation creates an additional burden for Carrick. He must construct the strongest possible line-up to face Chelsea, at a moment where the team desperately needs a positive result to climb the league table and relieve the growing pressure on his coaching position.

Four Manchester United Players Remain Sidelined With Injury

Manuel Ugarte and Benjamin Sesko are both dealing with serious long-term fitness issues. Neither player is yet cleared to return to action for Manchester United.

Ugarte sustained an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during the 2026 World Cup. Meanwhile Sesko is still recovering from a persistent shin injury picked up at the conclusion of last season.

Luke Shaw has also shown no encouraging recovery progress. The United left back was not present at the Carrington training ground on Wednesday 28 October, after picking up an injury in the previous fixture against Tottenham Hotspur.

Patrick Dorgu is also listed as unavailable. He remains receiving treatment for a hamstring injury sustained while on international duty with Denmark at the end of September.

With these four players absent, Carrick has extremely limited squad options. Losing personnel across multiple different positions will severely impact Manchester United's tactical flexibility, particularly when facing an opponent of Chelsea's standard.

Marcus Rashford Has Resumed Training

Amid the negative injury updates, Manchester United received one small positive development regarding Marcus Rashford. The forward, who spent last season on loan at Barcelona, has been spotted returning to light training at the club's training centre gym facility.

Rashford had previously been sidelined with a lower back injury. His return to training activities is welcome progress, though there is still no confirmation whether he has recovered sufficient match fitness to feature against Chelsea.

Rashford's availability would provide Carrick with an additional attacking option. However, the 45-year-old coach will still need to carefully assess the player's physical condition before confirming any place in the match squad.

Chelsea Clash Represents A Defining Test For Carrick

This match against Chelsea arrives at a point where Manchester United are in desperate need of a positive result. Their 16th place standing means the Red Devils require all three points from this fixture.

Carrick is now forced to address two simultaneous crises: reversing the team's poor on-pitch form, while working around the squad's injury absences. He must find workable solutions with the available players to prevent United from falling even further down the league Standings.

This fixture is widely expected to determine Carrick's future at Old Trafford. Another poor result will drastically escalate pressure from the club management, while a victory will grant him valuable breathing room to turn the situation around.
