Manchester United is currently going through one of the most difficult periods in the club's entire history. Their 0-2 defeat against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, 31 October 2026 extended the Red Devils' winless run to nine matches across all competitions. This result also equals their longest negative run of form recorded in the last 42 years.
This statistic has hit Michael Carrick particularly hard. The English head coach now faces mounting pressure after failing to drag Manchester United out of this slump that has dragged on for weeks.
According to official Opta data, Manchester United last recorded a longer winless streak back in September 1984, when the club went 10 full matches without a victory. This means the nine-game barren run during the 2026/2027 campaign marks the club's worst spell of form in four full decades.

Across these nine most recent fixtures, United have only managed three draws alongside six defeats. The loss to Chelsea is the latest in a string of disappointing results that also includes heavy defeats against Como and Bournemouth.
The situation has deteriorated further as Manchester United were also knocked out of the Carabao Cup, while still failing to deliver consistent performances in both domestic league and European competition.
Chelsea Defeat Heaps Further Pressure On Carrick
The match against Chelsea had actually offered early encouragement for Manchester United. Throughout the first half, Carrick's side created clear chances and put up genuine resistance against the home team.
However momentum shifted completely once Morgan Rogers opened the scoring for Chelsea in the 50th minute. The forward broke clean through United's defensive line before producing a clinical finish to put The Blues ahead.
Disaster struck for Manchester United in the 63rd minute when Lisandro Martinez was shown a straight red card. Following a VAR review, the referee awarded a penalty and dismissed the Argentine defender for his challenge on Wesley Fofana.
Cole Palmer stepped up to convert the spot kick successfully just one minute later. This goal confirmed Chelsea's 2-0 victory and deepened Manchester United's ongoing crisis.
Speaking after the full time whistle, Carrick admitted his side completely collapsed in performance after the half time break.
"We could not produce any good football in the second half. We should have been leading at half time, everything was going exactly as we had planned. We looked really dangerous for that first 45 minutes."
Carrick also reflected on how the match unravelled completely once his side conceded the opening goal.
"We lost all control completely in the second half. That first goal we conceded was entirely avoidable. Then the penalty made the situation almost impossible for us. We are under enormous pressure right now."
Michael Carrick's Future Remains In The Balance
This run of poor results has put Carrick's position at Old Trafford under intense public scrutiny. Consecutive defeats against Bournemouth then Chelsea have dramatically ramped up pressure on the former Manchester United midfielder.
Carrick was already in a precarious position following United's humiliating 0-3 home defeat against Bournemouth at Old Trafford. That loss extended their winless run to eight matches and sparked widespread speculation over an imminent managerial sacking.
For now however, Carrick remains in his post. Reuters confirmed he continued to lead first team training normally on 27 October 2026, after club executives held closed internal discussions regarding his future.
Following the Chelsea defeat, Carrick also publicly stated he expects to remain in charge for Manchester United's upcoming Champions League fixture against AS Roma next Tuesday.
Nevertheless, multiple British media outlets citing The Athletic report that Manchester United will conduct a formal review of Carrick's position ahead of the November international break. This means the next two matches will effectively act as a last chance for the manager.
Carrick had previously retained goodwill from sections of the fanbase due to his legacy as a former club player. Even after the Bournemouth defeat, some supporters applauded him at full time while the playing squad received heavy public criticism.
This goodwill however has not been enough to override the core problem at Manchester United: consistently disappointing Match Results.
Will The Next Two Matches Decide Carrick's Fate?
Manchester United urgently need an immediate response to end this catastrophic run of form. The upcoming Champions League clash against AS Roma represents Carrick's first opportunity to prove his side is still capable of turning their season around.
After that, all focus will turn to their final domestic fixture before the November international break. Results from these two matches will directly influence the club board's final decision on Carrick's tenure at Old Trafford.
For Manchester United, the challenge is not simply ending this nine match winless streak. The club must also rediscover the playing stability and winning mentality that have long formed the core of its identity.
For Carrick meanwhile, time is rapidly running out to reverse this slump. The fact that United have not endured this bad a run of form since 1984 serves as a stark reminder of just how deep the Red Devils' current crisis has become.
