Planning a vacation can now begin with a simple command directed at artificial intelligence, or Artificial Intelligence (AI). Users can request destination recommendations, draft multi-day itineraries, search for alternative transport options, and even compare accommodation selections aligned with their budget.

This approach has gained significant traction among Generation Z, or Gen Z. Having grown accustomed to integrating digital technology into daily life, this age group utilises AI to cut down time spent gathering information and structuring Travel plans.

2026 Booking.com data cited by Statista on 28 July 2026 shows 69 percent of Gen Z respondents use generative AI both while planning trips and during active travel. This figure represents the highest adoption rate out of all age groups included in the research.

For comparison, AI usage for travel related needs reached 64 percent among millennials, 41 percent for Gen X, and 11 percent for Baby Boomers. This survey gathered responses from 32,800 participants across 34 countries, all of whom had confirmed travel plans for 2026.

These findings illustrate How AI has become embedded into the routine behaviour of Young Travellers. This technology is not only used to source destination ideas, it also assists with comparing available options and provides on-demand guidance once travel is underway.

Research published August 2026 by Mindtrip in partnership with Sabre, Sojern, and MMGY Travel Intelligence provides broader context. 54 percent of survey respondents had already used AI for travel planning, while 75 percent stated they intend to use the technology for future trips.

AI adoption is also altering how destinations are selected. 40 percent of respondents reported discovering a tourist location via AI recommendations, while 29 percent have modified an existing travel plan based on suggestions generated by this technology.

For specific planning tasks, 42 percent of respondents use AI to source itinerary information. 32 percent utilise the technology to compare flights, hotels and tour packages, with an identical 32 percent relying on it to generate destination ideas.

This trend is most pronounced within the Gen Z demographic. 63 percent of Gen Z respondents confirmed they now use AI assistants just as frequently as social media when organising travel. This data shows AI is emerging as a direct competitor to social platforms as a primary travel reference source.

Research from the EY Future Travel Behaviours Observatory also confirms high adoption interest among Young Generations for this technology. EY's published findings note that 66 percent of Gen Z are interested in using AI-powered virtual assistants to plan holidays, compared to 48 percent interest recorded across the general population.

AI delivers convenience by allowing users to communicate very specific travel requirements. For example, travellers can request a 3-day itinerary for a set budget, filter for family-friendly destinations, or search for nearby attractions to minimise transit time.

This technology can also generate multiple alternative plan variations. If hotel costs exceed budget, users can request alternate accommodation options. If available visiting time is limited, the order of destinations can be rearranged according to priority.

AI Is Not The Sole Authority For Travel Decisions

Widespread use of AI does not mean the entire travel planning process can be fully delegated to technology. Ticket fares, transport schedules, venue operating hours and room availability are all subject to unplanned changes. AI recommendations also will not always reflect the most current on-ground conditions.

The Mindtrip partner survey also identified a clear gap between traveller behaviour and industry readiness. Only 22 percent of destination marketing organisations surveyed currently provide AI-powered trip planning functionality on their official websites.

At the same time, 63 percent of respondents confirmed they would willingly use an AI trip planner hosted directly on an official destination website.

This dynamic creates an opportunity for Tourism operators to develop more accessible digital services. Maintaining accurate, structured and regularly updated destination information will enable AI systems to deliver far more relevant recommendations for prospective visitors.

For travellers, the most reliable approach is to treat AI as a supporting assistant, not the single definitive source for decisions. Pricing and schedules should always be verified directly on official service provider websites, while destination details should be cross-confirmed with venue operators or other trusted sources.

Users are also advised to exercise caution when submitting personal data to AI services. Identification numbers, payment credentials and travel documents should never be shared unless strictly necessary.

When utilised appropriately, AI can make the Vacation Planning process faster and more flexible. For Gen Z, this technology is far more than just an information search tool -- it is a digital assistant designed to craft Travel Experiences tailored exactly to their needs.
