Manchester United manager Michael Carrick is facing a major challenge ahead of Manchester United's fixture against Chelsea this weekend. Amid mounting pressure from a run of poor results, the former Red Devils midfielder has had his match preparations disrupted by fitness problems affecting multiple key players.

Carrick's position as Manchester United manager is now under sharp public scrutiny. The club board has temporarily allowed him to remain in charge, but this clash against Chelsea is set to act as a deciding factor for his future tenure at Old Trafford.

Pressure is continuing to build as United remain in a dangerous league standing. The Red Devils currently sit 16th in the table with 7 points, only one point clear of the relegation zone. Defeat against Chelsea would risk dragging both Carrick and his squad into an even more precarious situation.

However, Carrick cannot prepare for this match with a full strength squad. Manuel Ugarte, Benjamin Sesko, Patrick Dorgu and Luke Shaw are all still undergoing injury rehabilitation, with no confirmation yet on when they will be available for selection.

This creates an additional burden for Carrick. He must put together the strongest possible lineup to face Chelsea, at a time where the team badly needs a positive result to climb the league table and relieve pressure on his managerial position.

Four Manchester United Players Remain Sidelined With Injury

Manuel Ugarte and Benjamin Sesko are both dealing with serious long-term fitness issues that have kept them out of action for Manchester United for an extended period.

Ugarte sustained an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during the 2026 World Cup. Meanwhile Sesko has been recovering from a shin bone injury picked up at the end of the previous season.

Luke Shaw has also shown no positive recovery progress. The United left-back was absent from Carrington Training Ground on Wednesday 28 October, after picking up an injury during the match against Tottenham Hotspur.

Patrick Dorgu is also still on the injury list. He remains under medical care for a Hamstring Injury sustained while representing the Denmark national team at the end of September.

With all four players unavailable, Carrick's selection options are heavily restricted. Losing personnel across different positions will undermine Manchester United's tactical flexibility, especially when facing an opponent of Chelsea's quality.

Marcus Rashford Resumes Training

Against the wave of bad injury news, Manchester United received a small positive update regarding Marcus Rashford. The forward, who spent last season on loan at Barcelona, has been spotted back working out at the club training centre gymnasium.

Rashford had previously been sidelined with a lower back issue. While his return to training activities is an encouraging development, there is still no confirmation if he will be physically fit enough to feature against Chelsea.

Rashford's availability would provide Carrick with an extra attacking option, though the 45-year-old manager will still need to fully assess the player's condition before finalising his match squad.

Chelsea Clash Is A Defining Test For Carrick

This fixture against Chelsea arrives at a moment where Manchester United desperately requires a positive result. Sitting in 16th place means the Red Devils must secure all three points from this game.

Carrick is navigating two separate crises simultaneously: turning around his team's on-pitch performances and working around the squad injury crisis. He will need to devise a working solution with the players available to prevent United falling further down the league Standings.

This match is widely expected to decide Carrick's future at Old Trafford. A poor result will escalate pressure from the club management, while a victory would grant him valuable breathing room to turn the club's fortunes around.
