Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have faced almost identical problems at Manchester United. Both men initially brought fresh hope when they arrived as interim managers at Old Trafford, only for the situation to unravel once they were handed permanent managerial trust from the club.
Carrick has come under intense scrutiny following Manchester United's disastrous start to the 2026/2027 season. A 0-3 home defeat to Bournemouth in the English League at Old Trafford followed by a 1-4 loss against Como in the Champions League has ramped up pressure on the coach, who just months earlier successfully guided the Red Devils back to Europe's top club competition.
This situation draws striking parallels with the tenure of former Manchester United Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The Norwegian boss also enjoyed a promising start after replacing Jose Mourinho in December 2018. However, the team's form collapsed sharply immediately after his interim role was converted to a permanent appointment in March 2019.

Bright Starts That Became Sentimental Traps
When Carrick replaced Ruben Amorim in January 2026, he successfully turned around the atmosphere inside the Manchester United dressing room. A side that had previously struggled for consistency began stringing together wins, including notable victories against top Premier League sides.
During his interim spell, Carrick recorded 11 wins, 3 draws and just 2 defeats from 16 league matches. This run secured Manchester United 3rd place in the table and a Champions League qualification spot, while also building overwhelming support to appoint him permanently.
The club management eventually handed Carrick a two-year contract in May 2026. This decision was based on his impressive on-pitch results, alongside his proven ability to restore player confidence and rebuild a positive dressing room culture.
Solskjaer went through an almost identical sequence. After replacing Mourinho, he led Manchester United on an extended winning run that included a famous Champions League upset against Paris Saint-Germain. This form was rewarded with a permanent managerial contract in March 2019.
That positive momentum did not last long. Manchester United finished the 2018/2019 season in 6th place, after suffering a string of damaging defeats against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Everton and Manchester City.
These two near-identical arcs raise critical questions about the risks of making permanent appointments based purely on short-term interim momentum. Success over a temporary caretaker spell is no guarantee that a manager can sustain performance levels under the full long-term pressure and expectations of a permanent role.
Carrick's Statistics Collapsed After Permanent Appointment
The contrast in Carrick's performance is stark when comparing his interim spell to the opening of the 2026/2027 season. As caretaker manager he had Manchester United competing at the top end of the table. Since being appointed permanently, the side has fallen into a full blown results crisis.
Across all competitions in the 2026/2027 season so far, Carrick has registered only 2 wins, 4 draws and 6 defeats from 12 matches. This gives him a win rate of just 16.7%.
In Premier League action, Manchester United have claimed just one single win from 8 matches, alongside 4 draws and 3 defeats. With only 7 points collected, the Red Devils currently sit 16th in the table, just one single point above the relegation zone.
Results in other competitions have offered no respite. Manchester United recorded 1 win and 2 defeats from their opening 3 Champions League matches, before being knocked out of the English League Cup at their first hurdle with a single defeat.
This terrible run of form has intensified the pressure on Carrick. Manchester United have now gone eight matches without a win across all competitions, including the heavy defeats to Como and Bournemouth.
Solskjaer's Tenure Serves As A Warning For United Management
Solskjaer's experience demonstrates how a manager's role and the pressure placed upon them changes fundamentally once appointed permanently. No longer are they only tasked with stabilising the situation - they are then expected to deliver consistent results and build a competitive squad capable of performing over an entire full season.
Solskjaer did go on to guide Manchester United to a 3rd place finish in 2019/2020 and 2nd place in the 2020/2021 season. Even so, he was ultimately sacked in November 2021 after the team's form once again declined sharply.
During his time as permanent manager, he recorded 78 wins, 33 draws and 38 defeats from a total of 149 matches.
Carrick now faces this exact same challenge, though the two situations are not perfectly identical. Solskjaer was granted time to rebuild after his early slump, while pressure on Carrick has escalated drastically with United now hovering just above relegation.
Internal debate within the club over the next course of action is also ongoing. Names including Julian Nagelsmann, Eddie Howe and Kieran McKenna have already been linked with the Manchester United Head Coach position, though reports of potential replacement candidates do not confirm that a dismissal decision has already been made.
Following the Bournemouth defeat, pundit Jamie Carragher was among those who stated that Carrick's position at Old Trafford is now under serious threat. Nevertheless, Manchester United have confirmed Carrick will remain in charge for the club's upcoming weekend fixture against Chelsea.
