Mexico City – Andrea Kimi Antonelli has made new history in Formula 1 (F1). The Mercedes driver has officially been crowned F1 World Champion 2026 after finishing third at the Mexican Grand Prix (GP) held at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez Circuit, Mexico City, Sunday (1/11/2026) local time, or early Monday morning (2/11/2026) WIB.

This title makes Antonelli the youngest ever world champion in the entire history of Formula 1. The Italian driver claimed his maiden world title at the age of 20, breaking the previous record set by Sebastian Vettel, who became the youngest world champion at 23 years old back in 2010.

This achievement is all the more special as Antonelli has ended Italy's long wait to once again have an F1 World Champion representing the country. He becomes only the third Italian driver ever to win this title, following Giuseppe Farina in 1950 and Alberto Ascari who won in 1952 and 1953.

Standings after the Mexican GP show Antonelli has accumulated 380 points. This total can no longer be matched by any of his rivals, confirming his world championship title with four races still remaining on the calendar.

Max Verstappen (Red Bull Racing) sits second in the standings with 261 points, while Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) occupies third place with 259 points.

Verstappen Wins Tight Duel Against Hamilton

Amidst Antonelli sealing the world championship title, Max Verstappen claimed victory at the 2026 Mexican Grand Prix.

The Red Bull Racing driver completed the 71-lap race with a finishing time of 2 hours 20 minutes 28.772 seconds. Verstappen crossed the line just 0.799 seconds ahead of second-placed Hamilton.

Antonelli completed the podium, finishing 4.006 seconds behind the race winner.

The race was tightly contested right from the opening lap. Hamilton, who started the race from Pole Position, initially held the lead. However, his battle with teammate Charles Leclerc shifted the dynamic of the race.

Leclerc briefly overtook Hamilton with a move into the first corner, but the Monegasque driver ran off track and was judged to have gained an unfair advantage from this manoeuvre.

This incident allowed Verstappen to move up into second place, dropping Hamilton down to third position.

Race stewards subsequently handed Leclerc a 5-second time penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage. This penalty further undermined Ferrari's efforts to hold onto the lead.

Verstappen then took over the race lead, working to maintain his gap as Hamilton kept applying consistent pressure from behind.

Bottas Crash Triggers Red Flag

Further drama unfolded at the Mexican Grand Prix when Valtteri Bottas crashed on lap 42.

The incident first saw the Safety Car deployed. However, damage to the circuit barriers meant officials raised the red flag to temporarily halt the race completely.

Once the track was declared safe, racing resumed. Verstappen retained the lead, while Hamilton continued hunting for an opportunity to claim the win.

Leclerc ran behind the two front runners. Antonelli meanwhile fought to hold his podium position, having briefly led the race earlier following a successful pit stop strategy.

Another incident occurred on lap 59, when Oscar Piastri and Arvid Lindblad made contact while fighting for position. The collision sent Lindblad's car off track and into the barriers at Turn 2.

The Safety Car was deployed once again to neutralise the race.

Verstappen handled the restart perfectly. Once racing resumed at full speed, the Dutch driver held off Hamilton's late charge all the way to the finish line.

This victory marked Verstappen's third win of the 2026 season.

Piastri Penalty Alters Final Classification

The official results of the Mexican Grand Prix were revised following post-race decisions from the stewards.

Oscar Piastri, who had originally crossed the line in 7th place, was handed a 10-second time penalty after being found responsible for the collision with Lindblad. This penalty meant the McLaren driver lost all championship points from the race, dropping him down to 15th position in the official F1 classified results.

Gabriel Bortoleto driving for Audi was one of the drivers who benefitted from this revised result.

This penalty ruling served as a reminder that the final race classification does not always match the order drivers cross the chequered flag.

Critically, this change to the results had no impact on the world championship standings. Antonelli's third place finish was enough to confirm his status as 2026 F1 champion regardless.

Antonelli's Unassailable Lead With Four Races Remaining

Antonelli's early championship confirmation represents a major milestone for the Mercedes team.

With 380 points, he holds a 119 point advantage over second placed Verstappen. This gap cannot be closed over the four remaining races on the 2026 calendar.

Attention now turns to the battle for second place in the drivers' championship, as well as the fight for the constructors' title.

Mercedes still have work to do to secure the constructors' trophy. Following the Mexican GP, the German squad sits on 630 points, ahead of second placed Ferrari who have 504 points.

The final four rounds of the 2026 season will be held in Brazil, Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi.

Meanwhile, Antonelli has cemented his place in Formula 1 history. At just 20 years old, this Mercedes Junior Driver has achieved a feat previously only accomplished by the greatest names in global Motorsport.
