The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has formally decided to revise the tournament calendar for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup. The competition, originally scheduled to run from 7 January 2027 through 5 February 2027, will now be held between 23 December 2027 and 21 January 2028.
This decision pushes back Asia's flagship men's football tournament nearly 11 months from its original timeline. The schedule adjustment was finalised after AFC held consultations with the 2027 Asian Cup Local Organising Committee (LOC) and the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF) as the host nation.
The security situation across the Middle East formed the core background for this ruling. AFC stated that ongoing developments in the region have created logistical barriers and travel disruptions that would have prevented the tournament from being delivered as planned on the original dates.

"These exceptional circumstances have created insurmountable challenges to organising and running the competition on the original schedule. This postponement is required in the best interests of all participating teams, match officials, spectators, and every other stakeholder," AFC confirmed in an official public statement issued Tuesday.
The announcement confirmed that safety guarantees and unobstructed travel access were the primary deciding factors. The delay is not related to stadium construction readiness alone, but also accounts for travel arrangements for national squads, officials, travelling supporters, and all personnel involved in the tournament.
This landmark AFC decision follows a series of attacks targeting territory inside Saudi Arabia. An assault on Riyadh International Airport the prior month was confirmed to have killed at least 12 people and left more than 300 injured.
The Iran-aligned Houthi militant group has publicly claimed responsibility for that attack.
AFC has not announced any changes to the host location. Saudi Arabia will remain the official 2027 Asian Cup Host Nation, with matches planned to be staged across Riyadh, Jeddah and Al Khobar.
Following this public announcement, AFC will formally submit the revised tournament dates to FIFA for official ratification. This means the 2027 Asian Cup calendar change is still pending final approval from the global world football governing body.
"AFC will continue working in close partnership with the LOC, participating member associations, sponsors, broadcast and commercial partners, and all stakeholders to deliver a tournament that upholds the reputation and operational standards of Asia's most prestigious men's national team competition," the AFC statement continued.
The 2027 Asian Cup will be the 19th edition of the tournament, featuring 24 qualified national teams. Organisers have prepared eight stadiums across the three host cities to stage a total of 51 matches.
This calendar revision will also directly impact the preparation schedules of all participating nations, including the Indonesian National Team. The Garuda Squad are drawn into Group F alongside Japan, Qatar and Thailand.
Before the schedule was amended, Indonesia had been set to open their Asian Cup campaign against Japan on 11 January 2027.
All match fixtures will now need to be realigned to the new tournament window. Indonesia and every other participating nation will wait for confirmation of the final updated Match Schedule once FIFA completes its approval process and AFC publishes the revised official tournament calendar.
This near 12-month postponement grants every competing nation additional time to finalise their squad preparations.
However, this creates a new challenge: maintaining player condition, competitive momentum, and training programme alignment to ensure teams are properly prepared at peak form when the Asian Cup is finally held.
