Exploring Labuan Bajo and Ijen Crater on a limited budget requires more than just searching for cheap transport tickets. Travellers also need to understand how to select a Tour Boat, schedule their visit properly, and avoid unexpected extra charges during the trip.

These two destinations have distinct characteristics. Labuan Bajo relies on sea travel to explore the islands within Komodo National Park, while Ijen Crater offers an early morning hiking experience to witness the crater panorama and the famous Blue Fire phenomenon.

For backpackers, cost-sharing strategies are one effective way to reduce expenses. However, even when opting for lower prices, travellers must always verify facilities, safety standards, and the legal operating status of all service providers.

Hunting for Open Trip Packages in Labuan Bajo

Sea travel is one of the largest single costs when visiting Labuan Bajo. Travellers wishing to visit Padar Island, Komodo Island, Pink Beach, or any other surrounding islands will require a tour boat.

Renting a private vessel carries significantly higher costs. For this reason, open group trips are the standard alternative for solo travellers or small groups.

Current prices for 1-day open trip packages from local operators vary. One provider offers open deck boat trips starting at IDR 750,000 per person, while other operators list rates starting from IDR 850,000 per person.

Before booking, travellers should always compare included facilities. Confirm whether the quoted price covers lunch, drinking water, a guide, snorkelling equipment, port transfer transport, and Conservation area entry fees.

Do not only select the lowest advertised price. Always verify the operator's credentials, boat condition, safety equipment, and the full clear travel itinerary.

Visiting the port area or Kampung Ujung directly to research local operators is also a valid option. That said, travellers should never assume last-minute discounts will be guaranteed.

There is no guarantee boat operators will reduce prices just because empty seats remain available.

All direct bookings must always be accompanied by official transaction receipts and a written breakdown of included facilities.

Choose a Boat For Your Needs, Not Just Price

Shared open deck wooden boats are a more budget-friendly option compared to speedboats. However, travel time, comfort levels, and the number of destinations visited must be taken into account.

Speedboats offer much shorter travel times, but come with higher fares. One operator lists 1-day speedboat packages starting at IDR 1,350,000 per person, compared to the IDR 750,000 rate for open deck boats.

Shared wooden boats are a good choice for travellers with flexible time. Meanwhile, visitors with tight schedules will need to prioritize travel speed and sea conditions.

Regardless of the boat type selected, all sailing decisions will follow safety regulations set by operators and port authorities. Always check BMKG Maritime Weather forecasts before departure, as wind, wave and current conditions can change rapidly.

Best Time to Visit Labuan Bajo

Choosing which month to travel also impacts both your experience and total budget. According to Indonesia.travel, the periods April-June and September-November are the recommended windows to visit Labuan Bajo.

During these months, land and sea conditions are generally far more suitable for tourism activities compared to the peak Rainy Season. Even so, travellers should still confirm weather forecasts before any sea travel.

The January-February period cannot be assumed to be the cheapest option without risks. These months fall within Labuan Bajo's rainy season, bringing the risk of high sea waves and cancelled or rescheduled sailings.

Aside from weather, travellers must also note the latest Komodo National Park regulations. The Komodo National Park Management has implemented a maximum daily visitor quota of 1000 people, with mandatory reservations via the SiOra application.

This quota system also applies timed visit slots specifically for South Padar. For this reason, travellers must confirm available quota slots before booking any boat trip.

Chasing the Ijen Crater Blue Fire

Ijen Crater hiking trails are open daily from 02.00 WIB to 12.00 WIB. However, there is no guarantee visitors will be able to view the Blue Fire without waiting in line. Visitor numbers, trail conditions, weather and official ranger decisions all affect the Hiking Experience.

Strict safety rules apply at Ijen Crater. All visitors are required to book entry tickets online via the AyoKeTamanNasional platform.

Travellers should monitor official announcements before departing. For 2026, scheduled routine closure for the Ijen Rijik cleaning program is set for 6 November.

Additional unplanned closures may also be implemented at any time if weather, volcanic activity or on-site conditions are deemed unsafe for visitors.

Local Homestays As Budget Accommodation

Accommodation is another major cost that can be reduced. Backpackers can look for local family-run homestays around the Licin area (Banyuwangi) or within central Labuan Bajo.

These simple accommodations typically offer more limited facilities compared to star-rated hotels. However, this choice allows travellers to allocate more of their budget towards the main travel activities.

Rates under IDR 150,000 per night are available at many of these basic accommodations, though availability will vary based on travel dates, guest numbers and included facilities. Always confirm pricing directly before booking.

Staying at local homestays also provides the opportunity to get insider tips from local residents. Travellers can ask for recommendations for local eateries, public transport routes, or alternative less crowded itineraries.

Always verify the accommodation location and previous guest reviews before making payment. A cheap stay that is located too far from your departure point will only end up adding extra transport costs.

Account For Unexpected Expenses

No budget strategy will work if travellers only calculate the main package price. In Labuan Bajo, remember to include Komodo National Park entry fees, port transfers and personal spending in your budget.

For Ijen Crater, account for transport to Paltuding basecamp, entry tickets, hiking equipment and food requirements.

For travellers visiting both destinations, always set aside emergency reserve funds for rescheduled boat sailings or unplanned extra overnight stays. This is critical, as inter-island sea travel is entirely dependent on operator schedules and weather conditions.

Backpackers can enjoy both Labuan Bajo and Ijen Crater on a controlled budget when planning with flexibility. The key is not to chase the absolute cheapest price at all costs, but to select safe, transparent services that match your actual travel needs.
