Italy has once again etched its name into Formula 1 history after Andrea Kimi Antonelli claimed the 2026 World Championship title. This victory for the Mercedes driver brings to an end Italy's 73-year long wait to once again have a world Champion in the most prestigious Motor Racing series on the planet.

Antonelli secured the world championship crown after finishing the Mexico Grand Prix in third position. This result was sufficient to seal the title, even with four full race rounds still remaining on the 2026 season calendar.

This milestone marks an iconic historic moment for Italy. Before Antonelli, only two Italian drivers had ever won the Formula 1 World Championship: Giuseppe Farina and Alberto Ascari.

Farina was the very first Italian driver to win Formula 1, taking the title during the championship's inaugural 1950 season. Competing for Alfa Romeo, he outperformed all rival drivers to claim the first ever world championship crown.

Two years later, Alberto Ascari became the next man to carry Italy to the top of the sport. This Ferrari Driver won the world championship in 1952, then successfully defended and retained his title during the 1953 season.

Since Ascari's final victory in 1953, Italy had not produced another Formula 1 World Champion driver. While many prominent famous names represented the nation over the decades, none had managed to end this decades-long wait.

Now Antonelli stands as the successor to the legacy forged by Farina and Ascari. Born in Bologna, this driver has returned the Italian flag to the very peak of the championship after more than seven full decades.

Kimi Antonelli Returns Italy To The Summit Of Formula 1

Antonelli's triumph is made even more notable by the fact he won this title with Mercedes, not Ferrari - the team long synonymous with Italian Motorsport that holds the deepest historic roots in Formula 1.

At the Mexico Grand Prix, Max Verstappen took race victory, with Lewis Hamilton crossing the line in second place. Antonelli finished third, and in doing so officially confirmed his maiden world championship title.

According to Reuters reports, Antonelli built an unassailable lead in the Championship Standings following this race that no rival could possibly overcome. He sealed the crown holding an advantage of 119 points.

This title places Antonelli among the exclusive small group of Italian drivers who have become Formula 1 World Champions, following the path laid by Farina and Ascari who first wrote this history during the championship's earliest era.

This success also represents a major historic milestone for Mercedes. The German outfit became the team that finally delivered Italy its first Formula 1 world champion driver after the 73 year title drought.

With this achievement, Antonelli is not only celebrating his first ever world championship. He has also opened an entirely new chapter within Italy's long, storied history in Formula 1.
