Labuan Bajo and Mount Ijen Crater consistently appear on the dream destination lists for Domestic Tourists. Both locations offer world-class natural experiences, ranging from the archipelago panoramas of Komodo National Park to the famous Blue Fire phenomenon at Mount Ijen. However, travel costs often cause prospective visitors to think twice before planning a trip.
Labuan Bajo is synonymous with traditional Pinisi sailing vessels, Island Hopping, and sea journeys to the native habitat of Komodo dragons. Meanwhile, Mount Ijen offers the experience of an early pre-dawn mountain hike to witness the blue flames, one of Indonesia's most renowned natural attractions.
The perception that these destinations are expensive is not entirely incorrect. That said, travellers actually have multiple options to reduce expenses: using sea transportation, staying at local homestays, choosing shared tour boats, and splitting travel costs with other visitors.

Ijen Crater Remains Closed to Tourists, Here Is Its Latest Condition
The critical point for backpacker budgets is calculating all expenses comprehensively. For example, when travelling from Banyuwangi to Labuan Bajo, it is insufficient to only account for train and ferry tickets. Travellers must also factor in transport costs to ports, meals during transit, additional accommodation, tourist site entry fees, and return travel to their home city.
Sea Transportation Can Reduce Travel Costs
One of the most affordable options to reach Labuan Bajo is via passenger ship. According to travel guidelines published by the Ministry of Tourism through Indonesia.travel, sea travel costs from Bali to Labuan Bajo are estimated at IDR 300,000–IDR 500,000 per person, including minor on-board expenses during the voyage.
For comparison, travelling via overland routes plus ferry crossings is estimated to cost IDR 500,000–IDR 800,000 per person. This total varies depending on local transport choices and any required overnight stays during transit.
Travellers departing from Banyuwangi will need to plan their journey in stages. After visiting Mount Ijen, the trip can continue to either Bali or Surabaya, before aligning with available ship departure schedules for Labuan Bajo.
Travellers should note that national PELNI ferry schedules and routes are subject to change, while certain routes are also operated by other private shipping companies. For this reason, prospective passengers must verify schedules and ticket availability through official channels before confirming travel dates.
Mount Ijen Can Be Explored Without Luxury Tour Packages
To save costs travelling to Banyuwangi, visitors can take economy class trains. From the city centre, continue the journey using local public transport to the Paltuding area, the official starting point for Ijen crater hikes.
Renting a motorbike is an option that offers flexibility, especially for pairs of travellers. However, vehicle condition, weather, and road conditions leading up to Paltuding must all be taken into consideration.
Visitors who are not accustomed to driving in mountainous terrain are advised to use shared transport or local shuttle services instead.

The Natural Tourism Park of Mount Ijen opens hiking access daily from 02.00 to 12.00 Western Indonesian Time.
All visitors are required to book tickets online via the AyoKeTamanNasional platform, and must meet health requirements including carrying a doctor's medical clearance certificate valid for a maximum of 3 days before the visit date.
Hikers must prepare non-slip footwear, warm jackets, head torches, and approved respiratory protection equipment as specified by park management. Individuals with a history of heart conditions and respiratory disorders including asthma require special precautions for this hike.
There is no guarantee the Blue Fire phenomenon will be visible on any given visit. Gas levels, weather conditions, wind direction, and park safety policies will all affect visibility of the blue flames. For this reason, personal safety must always remain the top priority.
You Do Not Need A Luxury Pinisi Ship To Visit Labuan Bajo
Upon arrival in Labuan Bajo, travellers can opt for shared open group sea trips. This option allows boat charter costs to be split between all participants, making it far more affordable than renting a private vessel.
Local tour operators offer one-day open deck group trips starting from IDR 750,000 per person. This package includes visits to multiple destinations including Padar Island, Komodo or Rinca Island, Manjarite Island, and Kelor Island.
Other operators offer similar packages starting from IDR 850,000 per person. Prices will vary based on boat type, included facilities, departure date, and selected visiting sites.
However, travellers should take note of costs that are NOT included in these tour packages. Most notably, Komodo National Park entry fees are separate. According to official Indonesia.travel information referencing national non-tax revenue regulations, Domestic Tourist entry tickets are priced at IDR 50,000 on weekdays, and IDR 75,000 on weekends and public holidays.
Visitors must also adhere to reservation policies. Komodo National Park Management implements visitor quota limits and mandatory booking via the SiOra application. Confirming available visit quotas before booking any boat tour is a critical step.
For travellers on tight budgets, land-based exploration is a viable alternative.
Amelia Hill offers panoramic coastal and hilltop views, while Rangko Cave provides a unique natural attraction with its natural saltwater pools. Travel costs to these locations will still need to be calculated based on chosen transport and local service rates.
Budget Simulation: IDR 2.75 Million Does Not Cover Full Travel Requirements
The estimated IDR 2.75 million budget for a combined Ijen and Labuan Bajo trip is only an initial rough simulation, not a price for a complete packaged tour.
For reference: sea travel from Bali to Labuan Bajo costs approximately IDR 300,000–500,000. Meanwhile one-day group trips in Labuan Bajo start from IDR 750,000 per person, not including conservation area entry fees.
Beyond these two items, travellers will still need to allocate funds for travel to Banyuwangi, Ijen Crater entry tickets, local transport, accommodation, meals, inter-port transfers, and return travel to their home city.
An IDR 2.75 million budget may be achievable for highly flexible backpackers who already have some travel components arranged in advance.
However this figure is not a reliable benchmark for a complete 5-day 4-night trip departing from Java to Labuan Bajo.
5 Days 4 Nights Is Too Short For This Multi-Stop Itinerary
This combined trip is much more realistic when allocated 7 to 9 days total, depending on ship schedules and the traveller's departure city.
The first two days can be used for travel to Banyuwangi and hiking Mount Ijen. The following day is allocated for travel to the departure port and any required transit.
After arriving in Labuan Bajo, travellers can allocate one full day for the island hopping group trip, plus one additional day for land-based sightseeing before returning home.
This schedule will still need to be adjusted around transport timetables. Sea voyages take significantly longer than air travel, and ships do not operate daily on every route.
For ideal visiting conditions, Indonesia.travel recommends the periods April–June and September–November for travelling to Labuan Bajo. Sea conditions and weather should still be monitored closely, as these will affect ship operations.
Backpackers should also account for potential schedule changes caused by bad weather. BMKG Maritime Weather forecasts are an essential reference before undertaking any sea travel.
Labuan Bajo and Mount Ijen do not require luxury facilities to be enjoyed. Alternative transport, local homestays and shared group trips can all help keep costs low.
That said, Budget Travel does not mean compromising on personal safety, or forcing an unrealistic, underfunded travel plan.
