La Liga Standings: Real Madrid Climbs to Second Place, Atletico Madrid Enters the Top Four.

The race at the top of the 2026/2027 La Liga standings has tightened further following the fifth matchweek fixtures. Real Madrid climbed into second place to put pressure on league leaders Barcelona, while Atletico Madrid secured a spot in the top four.

Barcelona remains top of the table with 15 points, maintaining their perfect start to the season with a 4-2 victory over Levante.

Real Madrid sit second on 12 points. Los Blancos returned to winning ways with a dominant 4-1 home win against Rayo Vallecano at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Barcelona Maintain Perfect Record As Madrid Close The Gap

These three points saw Real Madrid overtake Deportivo Alaves, who had previously occupied second position.

Alaves dropped down to third place on 10 points after falling to a 1-2 away defeat at Racing Santander. This result has compressed the chasing pack behind Barcelona even further.

Real Madrid now trail Barcelona by just three points, while Alaves sit only two points behind Carlo Ancelotti's side.

Atletico Madrid Break Into The Top Four

Another major shift in the standings saw Atletico Madrid claim a 3-0 away victory over Real Sociedad at the Reale Arena.

Having previously sat in sixth place, Atletico have now climbed to fourth position with 10 points. They are now just two points behind Real Madrid and five points adrift of league leaders Barcelona.

This victory marked an important response from Atletico following an inconsistent start to the campaign. Taking all three points away at Sociedad has put the club right back into the upper table battle.

Three Late Goals Seal Atletico Victory

Atletico were forced to wait until the closing stages of the match to secure their win. After the match remained goalless for most of the 90 minutes, the deadlock was finally broken by Grimaldo's 80th minute penalty.

Jonathan David doubled Atletico's lead in the 90th minute. The Canadian forward produced a fine solo run before firing an unstoppable left-footed shot past Real Sociedad goalkeeper Alex Remiro.

Giuliano Simeone rounded off the victory in stoppage time, bursting into the penalty area with a sprint before beating Remiro in a one-on-one situation.

These three late goals confirmed the 3-0 final scoreline and lifted Atletico into fourth place.

For Real Sociedad, this defeat sees them drop down to 12th position in the standings with seven points.

Sevilla Lurk Just Outside Top Four, Valencia Rooted To Bottom

Sevilla also sit on 10 points and occupy fifth place, only behind Atletico Madrid on goal difference.

Sevilla returned to winning ways with a narrow 1-0 victory against Valencia. Juan Iglesias' 81st minute goal secured all three points for the home side and deepened Valencia's miserable start to the season.

Valencia now sit rock bottom of the La Liga table. They have collected just one point from five matches, courtesy of a single draw and four defeats.

Elche sit in 19th place with two points after playing out a 1-1 draw with Athletic Bilbao. Villarreal occupy 18th place, level on points with Elche.

Villarreal's position is not yet final however, as they have only played four matches so far. They are scheduled to face Real Betis to complete matchweek five on Monday evening Spanish time, or early Tuesday morning WIB.

Malaga sit 17th on three points after securing a 1-1 away draw at Celta Vigo.

With one fixture still remaining from matchweek five, the current standings are not yet fully finalised. However the shape of the title race is already becoming clear: Barcelona hold a perfect record at the summit, Real Madrid are closing in, while Atletico Madrid and Sevilla both sit on 10 points just behind Alaves.
