10 Best Airports in the World 2026 Version by Consumer Choice Center, Including Tokyo and Dubai
Airports are almost always both the first entry point and the final place travelers pass through before leaving a destination. For this reason, the experience at an airport can directly shape the overall impression of an entire trip.
This is never only about grand terminal buildings or luxury on-site facilities. For travelers, an ideal airport is instead one that is easily reachable, has practical transport connections, fast security processing, and offers a wide range of flight options.
These factors form the assessment criteria for the 2026 World Consumer Airport Index, a global airport ranking compiled based on the real perspective and convenience experienced by passengers.
As reported by Euronews on Monday (14/9/2026), this index was published by the Consumer Choice Center (CCC), an independent global consumer advocacy organisation. The evaluation is deliberately designed to view airports entirely from a traveler's standpoint, including how easily passengers can travel to the airport and continue onwards to their final destination after arrival.
It Is Never Only About Grand Terminal Buildings
Within this index, airport location is counted as one of the highest priority considerations. Distance from the city centre, access to tourist destinations, and the variety of available transport options are all factored into the scoring.
In other words, an airport located far from the urban centre is not automatically a bad facility. However this remote location will become a critical problem if it is not supported by an efficient, well-connected transport network.
The CCC assessment also accounts for additional metrics including direct access to metro or national rail services, ease of navigation between terminals and gates, variety of operating airlines, average flight delay rates, and availability of accommodation within the airport vicinity.
This is what makes the index particularly useful for travelers. Rather than only rating features visible inside the terminal, the ranking measures how practical the airport is to use as part of a full end-to-end travel journey.
Airports Are Ranked In Two Separate Categories
The CCC divided the global ranking into two groups, classified by annual passenger volume.
The first category applies to airports that serve more than 47.2 million passengers per year. The second category covers all airports with passenger numbers below this threshold.
This categorisation ensures comparisons between very large major airports and lower traffic facilities are made fairly and proportionally.
Notably, the average time travelers spend going through security screening is also included as a weighted assessment factor.
Airports receive bonus points if their average security waiting time falls under 3 minutes. Additional scoring is also awarded to airports that operate without a night operation curfew.
For any traveler who has ever rushed to catch a connecting flight with minimal transit time, these factors are far more than just abstract numbers on a report.
Barcelona Named Best Large Airport
For the large airport category, Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport in Spain secured first place in the global ranking.
Meanwhile Düsseldorf Airport in Germany claimed the top position for the lower passenger volume airport category.
Both facilities stand out particularly for their security processing performance. At Barcelona airport, passengers spend an average of only around 3 minutes completing security checks. At Düsseldorf, the waiting time is recorded as nearly instantaneous.
For travelers, even a difference of just a few minutes can be critical, especially when rushing for a connecting flight or arriving at the airport at the very last minute.
Not All Airports Received Favourable Ratings
This index also highlights the airports that placed at the very bottom of the global ranking.
Among large airports, Antalya, Guangzhou Baiyun and Frankfurt received some of the lowest overall scores.
For the smaller airport category, Seoul Gimpo, Punta Cana and London Stansted were ranked among the worst performing facilities in this index.
The issues identified across these low ranked airports are broadly similar: locations far from city centres, limited app-based transport options, inadequate rail connections, excessive security waiting times, and high rates of flight delays.
For travelers these problems have direct tangible impacts on travel time and costs. For example, an airport located far from the urban centre will raise transport expenses and extend the journey time required to reach accommodation.
