For travelers, the flying experience is never just about arriving at the destination. Seat comfort, cabin crew friendliness, food quality, in-flight entertainment, and even internet connectivity are now all factors that determine whether a journey feels enjoyable or simply draining.

Amidst increasingly fierce competition in the global aviation industry, Singapore Airlines has once again claimed the top spot.

The Singaporean carrier was named the World's Best Airline 2026 at the Skytrax World Airline Awards. This recognition places Singapore Airlines as the highest ranked airline on this year's global list.

For travelers currently selecting an airline for their next trip, this Skytrax ranking serves as a valuable reference. That is because the assessment does not only consider an airline's brand reputation, but also every aspect of the passenger experience.

Singapore Airlines Returns To The Top

This 2026 win sees Singapore Airlines reclaim first place, after Qatar Airways took the title in 2025.

In the latest Skytrax rankings, Qatar Airways dropped to second place, while Cathay Pacific Airways retained its third position. ANA All Nippon Airways placed fourth, with Turkish Airlines rounding out the top five.

Emirates came in sixth, followed by Air France, Hainan Airlines, Japan Airlines, and Korean Air taking positions seven through ten respectively.

Skytrax describes the World Airline Awards as a passenger-voted recognition program. First launched in 1999, the awards cover every category of the in-flight experience.

More Than Just Overall Airline Rankings

Notably, the 2026 Skytrax Awards do not stop at the overall best airline list.

Singapore Airlines also took home awards for World's Best Economy Class, as well as the title for Best Economy Class Catering.

Meanwhile, Qatar Airways continues to dominate the premium travel segment. The carrier was awarded World's Best Business Class Airline, alongside additional wins for Best Business Class Seat and Best Business Class Lounge.

For travelers who prioritize cabin cleanliness, there is another standout carrier to note. STARLUX Airlines was named the World's Cleanest Airline Cabin for 2026, beating out both Singapore Airlines and ANA.

The award for World's Best Cabin Crew went to Cathay Pacific Airways. Garuda Indonesia also performed strongly in this category, placing 8th worldwide.

How Did Southeast Asian Carriers Perform?

This section will be of particular interest to Indonesian travelers. Among ASEAN carriers, Thai Airways was the only one to break into the global Top 20, placing 20th. This marks a significant improvement from its 29th place ranking in 2025.

Singapore Airlines was also named the Best Airline in Asia in Skytrax's regional rankings. Cathay Pacific placed second, followed by ANA, Hainan Airlines, Japan Airlines, Korean Air, EVA Air, STARLUX Airlines, Thai Airways, and Malaysia Airlines.

Meanwhile, Garuda Indonesia placed 66th globally, down from 46th place in 2025. Despite this drop, the Indonesian flag carrier still received recognition for its cabin service, retaining its 8th place position in the global Best Cabin Crew ranking, as well as winning the Best Cabin Crew in Indonesia category.

This demonstrates that an airline's overall ranking does not always reflect its full performance. Travelers can find carriers that excel in specific areas, whether that is cabin service, inflight meals, business class experience, cleanliness, or other facilities.

Budget Airlines Also Received Their Own Recognition

Travelers on a budget do not only need to consider full-service carriers.

In the low-cost carrier category, AirAsia was once again named World's Best Low-Cost Airline 2026. This marks the 17th consecutive year that AirAsia has won this category.

Scoot placed second, also taking the award for World's Best Long-Haul Low-Cost Airline. Vueling, Eurowings, and Iberia Express completed the top five global low-cost carriers.

For travelers who prioritize ticket prices and itinerary flexibility, this category provides a dedicated reference point when comparing flight options.

What Does This Mean For Travelers?

The 2026 Skytrax rankings should be interpreted as more than just a list of who took first place.

Travelers focused on economy class comfort can look to Singapore Airlines, while those seeking a premium business class experience can consider the carriers recognised with specialist awards in that category.

For passengers who place high importance on cabin cleanliness, STARLUX is a notable option. Meanwhile, those travelling on a tighter budget can refer to AirAsia and Scoot as leading options in the low-cost segment.

Ultimately, this global best airline list should never be treated as the only deciding factor. Every trip has different requirements. A traveller going on a family holiday will have very different priorities compared to a backpacker, business traveller, or someone taking a long-haul flight.

One thing remains clear: the flying experience is now an integral part of the journey itself. Choosing an airline that matches your needs will make the trip to your destination feel far more comfortable.
