Shayne Pattynama has once again had to delay his opportunity to make his debut for Persija Jakarta. Despite being named in the squad list for the opening 2026/2027 I.League Cup fixture against PSMS Medan, the Indonesian National Team left-back still did not receive any playing minutes.
Persija drew 1-1 against PSMS at the North Sumatra Main Stadium, Medan on Tuesday 3 November 2026. The Macan Kemayoran side first took the lead via Figo Dennis' 42nd minute goal, before Phillerson Natan equalised in the 80th minute.
For this match, Persija deployed Pratama Arhan at left-back. The Indonesian national team player completed the full 90 minutes, while Dony Tri Pamungkas was introduced as a substitute in the 67th minute. Shayne remained on the bench for the entire duration of the fixture.

This situation extends the 28-year-old's wait for game time with Persija. Prior to this match, Shayne had also not been named in matchday squads for multiple 2026/2027 BRI Super League fixtures.
According to match records up to 31 October, Shayne was omitted from Persija's squads for games against PSIM Yogyakarta, Persita Tangerang, Arema FC, Persik Kediri and Dewa United. The PSMS fixture marked the first time he made a Persija matchday squad this season, but still did not result in his club debut.
Notably, Persija had previously indicated Shayne was in line for possible playing time in the I.League Cup. However, final selection decisions always remain subject to player condition and team tactical requirements.
Ahead of the PSMS match, Persija assistant coach Choi In-cheul confirmed Shayne was still completing his fitness building process.
He stated the coaching staff would monitor how the match progressed before making any decision to field Shayne.
Head coach Shin Tae-yong did not travel with Persija to Medan for this fixture due to health issues. Choi In-cheul took charge of the side in the South Korean's absence, meaning the decision not to use Shayne was not made directly by Shin from the touchline.
Even so, Shayne's lack of game time remains a point of public attention, as he had also been excluded from squads for the club's primary league competition.
Shin had previously addressed Shayne's omissions. Quoted on the official I.League website on 11 October, Shin explained the defender required adaptation time following his extended national team commitments.
"At this stage, Shayne has not had sufficient time to train full time with the squad and internalise our tactical system due to his national team duties. This is one of the core considerations behind him not yet being included in our match lineups," stated Shin Tae-yong.
This explanation referenced Shayne's involvement with the Indonesian national side at the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup. He reported to the Garuda squad after the initial call-up announcement, and remained with the national team through the entire tournament including the final against Thailand on 5 October.
Shayne was not a first choice starter throughout the tournament. However, he was brought on in the final at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium, replacing Justin Hubner in the 101st minute before being named as one of Indonesia's penalty shootout takers.
Indonesia won the final 4-2 on penalties after the match finished 2-2 following 120 minutes of play. Shayne successfully converted his kick as the team's fourth taker, playing his part in securing Indonesia's first ever FIFA ASEAN Cup title.
This international success makes his club situation particularly notable: after featuring in a trophy winning national squad, he is yet to receive regular playing opportunities at Persija.
For the time being, Persija have multiple available options at left-back. Pratama Arhan and Dony Tri Pamungkas are the two players who have received game time in the position so far. With tight competition for this spot, Shayne will need to make the most of every chance available to prove his readiness and ability.
Shayne's contract with Persija runs until 30 June 2028, meaning the 11 August 1998 born defender still has time to secure his place in the Macan Kemayoran squad.
Persija are scheduled to face Persebaya Surabaya on 7 November in the next round of the 2026/2027 BRI Super League. This fixture may present Shayne with his next chance to be considered by the coaching staff, though there remains no confirmation over potential playing time.
