A dramatic victory by Manchester United over AS Roma has granted Michael Carrick a small moment of relief. Even so, the 3-2 result at Old Trafford is not sufficient to secure the manager's job safety, particularly as the Red Devils remain stuck in the lower ranks of the 2026/2027 English Premier League.
United broke their nine-match winless streak by mounting a comeback from two goals down. Bruno Fernandes' penalty goal and a brace from Matheus Cunha shifted the atmosphere inside Old Trafford, while delivering Carrick the critically needed result amid intense pressure over his position.
Prior to the match, Carrick was already in a vulnerable position. United had suffered defeats against Chelsea, Bournemouth, Como and Atletico Madrid during a poor run of form that had eroded supporter confidence in his squad.

After completing this ninth matchweek fixture, Manchester United sits 17th in the provisional Premier League standings. They have only collected 7 points from nine matches, with a record of one win, four draws and four losses.
United only sits above the relegation zone on goal difference. This position falls drastically short of the standards for a club with ambitions to compete at the top tier of English football.
Club management had previously chosen to retain Carrick despite consistently underwhelming match results. Ahead of the Roma fixture, the 45-year-old manager also avoided speaking extensively about his own future.
Carrick stated his full focus remains on match preparations and efforts to pull United out of their slump. He also acknowledged the squad must urgently convert their potential into concrete results.
The victory over Roma served as an initial response to these demands. However, United's issues are not fully resolved. The team still needs to fix their defensive structure, having conceded twice in the first half and allowed Roma to generate multiple dangerous scoring chances.
Additionally, United must prove this Champions League resurgence can carry over into domestic competition. While this European win has provided a much-needed confidence boost, the 17th placed standing in the Premier League remains Carrick's primary pressing priority.
The next challenge is already approaching. Manchester United is scheduled to host Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday, 8 November 2026.
Villa arrives at the fixture in far stronger form. They currently occupy 10th place with 12 points from nine matches, holding a five point advantage over United. Aston Villa also holds a better recent league record, with three wins, one draw and one defeat from their last five Premier League matches.
This gap in league standings makes this fixture high stakes for both sides. United require a victory to pull clear of the relegation zone, while Villa has the chance to climb higher up the mid-table positions.
Carrick will also be dealing with squad availability issues. Matheus Cunha will face disciplinary consequences following his red card against Roma.
Meanwhile, Lisandro Martinez will still be serving his playing suspension for the upcoming match against Aston Villa.
Amid this difficult situation, support from the playing squad remains a critical asset. Youri Tielemans, who played a key part in United's second half turnaround, described the win over Roma as the squad's collective response to the pressure facing Carrick.
"There is enormous pressure on the manager right now, and we answered that with this comeback victory. All we can do is stand firmly behind him and give him our full support," Tielemans was quoted by The Guardian.
Tielemans' statement confirms the United dressing room remains united behind Carrick for now. However this support must be matched with consistent results, not just a single isolated win.
The victory over Roma has indeed given Carrick a small amount of breathing room. That said, the fixture against Aston Villa will prove a far more decisive test for his future at the club.
Should they secure another three points, United will have a strong chance to build positive momentum before the international break. On the other hand, a negative result will immediately reignite speculation over Carrick's future at Old Trafford.
