Veda Ega capitalised on this incident to continue advancing through the field.
By the start of lap 10, the Honda Team Asia rider had already moved into 5th place. Veda then began closing down David Muñoz, who was running directly ahead of him.
One lap later, the gap between Veda and Muñoz was recorded at 1.109 seconds. Veda maintained consistent pressure before successfully completing an overtake on lap 13 to take 4th position.
Even this climb still did not put Veda within podium contention. He remained 9.804 seconds behind third-placed rider Alvaro Carpe.
At the front of the pack, Maximo Quiles ran a faultless consistent race. The Aspar Team rider held the race lead all the way through lap 14.
Drama Unfolds For Veda Ega In The Final Two Laps
Racing intensity spiked sharply as the grand prix entered its closing stages. Veda Ega was forced to defend hard to hold 4th place against the chasing group of rivals.
On lap 15, Veda lost positions after being overtaken by both Joel Esteban and Casey O'Gorman. Minor contact also occurred between riders during this tight battle.
The situation deteriorated further on lap 16, when Veda was involved in an incident with David Muñoz.
Entering a corner, Veda moved across to block the racing line Muñoz was taking. The Intact GP rider ran off track as a result and collided with the circuit safety barriers.
Race Direction immediately launched an official investigation into the collision. Following review, Veda Ega was issued a Long Lap Penalty.
This penalty was handed out with only two laps remaining, while Veda was still running in 4th position. He was required to divert through the designated long lap zone to serve the sanction.
Further issues arose when race officials ruled Veda had not correctly executed the long lap penalty. He was therefore ordered to serve the full penalty a second time.
This had a devastating impact on his final race position. After completing both penalties, Veda rejoined the main circuit down in 13th place.
He remained in this position for the final remaining kilometres. Veda Ega ultimately finished the 2026 Austrian Moto3 Grand Prix in 13th position.
Maximo Quiles Claims Victory At The Red Bull Ring
Amid all the drama surrounding Veda, Maximo Quiles secured a comfortable race victory.
The Aspar Team rider took the chequered flag first, completing the full 20 lap race distance in a time of 33 minutes 24.323 seconds.
This result further cemented Quiles' lead at the top of the 2026 Moto3 provisional championship standings.
Quiles now holds a total of 306 championship points. Meanwhile, Veda Ega also passed the 100 season points milestone after scoring points at this Austrian round.
For Veda, the outcome at the Red Bull Ring perfectly illustrates just how unforgiving and competitive Moto3 racing is. Having climbed from 19th on the grid all the way into the top 4, his strong race was completely overturned in the final minutes by the penalty drama.
