The 2026 Moto3 Malaysia event at Sepang International Circuit is growing increasingly intense, as Veda Ega Pratama and Hakim Danish trade top positions against one another. This duel between the two young Southeast Asian riders goes far beyond national pride for Indonesia and Malaysia: it is a fight for critical competitive positioning within the cutthroat Moto3 class field.

Veda first made his mark during Friday practice on 30 October 2026. The Honda Team Asia rider recorded a lap time of 2:11.519 to claim 3rd place, finishing just 0.092 seconds behind session leader David Almansa of Liqui Moly Dynavolt Intact GP, who set the benchmark at 2:11.427.

Hakim Danish also delivered a competitive showing in front of his home supporters. The AEON Credit-MT Helmets-MSI rider concluded the practice session in 4th place with a time of 2:11.573, separated from Veda by a mere 0.054 seconds.

These results demonstrate just how narrow the gap is between the two riders on Sepang's tarmac. While Veda held the advantage on day one, Hakim required very little time to mount a response.

During FP2 on Saturday 31 October, the positions flipped. The Malaysian rider finished the session in 6th place, while Veda crossed the timed runs in 8th. David Almansa once again ended as the fastest rider, followed by Maximo Quiles and David Munoz.

Competition tightened even further as the entire top ten riders in FP2 were covered by only half a second. This margin means even small adjustments to bike setup or fast lap strategy can completely rearrange positions on the timing board.

Veda Holds The Championship Standings Edge

This Sepang battle carries extra significance when viewed against the 2026 Moto3 interim championship standings. Ahead of the Malaysian round, Veda occupied 8th place with 111 points, with Hakim following directly behind in 9th on 103 points.

That 8 point lead over his Malaysian rival is far from comfortable, meaning the final result at Sepang holds real potential to swap the two riders' positions in the overall table.

Their recent form also reflects this seesaw rivalry. At the preceding Moto3 Indonesia round at Mandalika, Veda finished 6th while Hakim crossed the line in 14th place.

Veda arrives in Malaysia with additional momentum, having claimed Pole Position in Australia, before the Phillip Island race was ultimately cancelled due to severe weather conditions.

Separate Routes To The Same Qualifying Stage

Veda secured a major advantage via his 3rd place practice result. This performance guaranteed the Indonesian rider an automatic pass directly into Q2, allowing him to skip the Q1 knockout round entirely and focus fully on securing the best possible starting grid slot.

"I am very happy with how we have opened this Weekend. The bike felt excellent right from the very first lap," stated Veda in an official Honda Team Asia press release.

Hakim also locked in his Q2 place via his practice results. His 4th place finish meant the home favourite also avoided Q1, and he carried solid form through FP2 to retain 6th position in that session.

Malaysian national news agency Bernama reported that Hakim has confirmed he is finally regaining his optimal feeling with the motorcycle, after struggling with setup across the previous two or three championship rounds.

He is still working to refine bike tuning, specifically targeting improved grip when navigating Sepang's high-speed corner sections.

Qualifying will present the next chance for both riders to measure their full pace against one another. With the tiny margins demonstrated during free practice, both Veda and Hakim hold realistic chances of qualifying at the front of the grid.

Home crowd support will provide Hakim with extra energy, though Veda has already demonstrated consistent raw speed from the first day of running.

This head-to-head rivalry is set to be one of the most compelling storylines of the weekend, particularly as the Sepang result will have a direct impact on both riders' final championship standings for the season.

Moto3 Malaysia 2026 will proceed with qualifying sessions on Saturday 31 October. The main grand prix race is scheduled for Sunday 1 November, run over 15 full laps at Sepang International Circuit.
