Generation Z is beginning to transform how people approach travel. For Young Travelers, holidays are no longer just about chasing aesthetic photos for social media. Instead, they see trips as an opportunity to discover new experiences, learn about local cultures, and escape burnout from daily routines.

This shift is also driving the growth of urban tourism. Destinations that combine open public spaces, natural surroundings, and themed travel concepts are increasingly catching the eye of Young Generations who want both visually appealing environments and memorable on-site activities.

Hospitality industry representative Yudhitia Kurniawan stated that visual appeal is one of the top priorities for Generation Z when selecting both travel destinations and accommodation.

However, this visual appeal always goes hand in hand with comfort and the fundamental need for proper rest.

“Generation Z is extremely selective. They look for locations that don’t just feel comfortable, but also have strong, distinct visual character. Shareable experiences are an important added value,” explained Yudhitia.

It's No Longer Just About Aesthetic Photos

Social media does play a role in introducing new destinations to Young Travelers. Eye-catching photos and videos can spark curiosity, but the actual on-site experience remains the most critical part of any trip.

2025 data from Indonesia's Central Statistics Agency (BPS) records that 67.2% of Generation Z travel specifically to refresh their minds. Meanwhile, 18.5% take trips to explore local culture, and 14.3% travel to seek out new life experiences.

These figures confirm that rest and rejuvenation are still the primary motivation for Young Travelers when they go away. Social media may be the entry point that leads people to discover new locations, but comfort, quality of experience, and overall satisfaction during the trip are what define a destination's long term appeal.

This is why travel trends among Gen Z cannot be reduced to simply wanting to visit photogenic locations. This generation also seeks out changed atmospheres, hands-on activities to try, and lasting meaningful impressions that stay with them long after their holiday ends.

Hotels and Destinations Adapting to Gen Z Travel Trends

These shifting preferences are pushing the tourism industry to develop more creative spaces. Hotels and destination managers are now prioritising thematic design, communal public areas, and intentional lighting that enhances both the atmosphere and visitor experience.

Careful spatial design has become a core way for destinations to build their identity. Locations with strong, distinct character encourage visitors to stay longer, spend time on site, and share their experiences with others.

That said, aesthetics are not the only factor to focus on. Comfort, service quality, cleanliness, and availability of relevant activities for visitors remain critical — to ensure travellers do not only visit just to take a quick photo.

For industry stakeholders, this shift opens up opportunities to develop far more varied tourism products.

Relaxation experiences, natural outdoor environments, themed attractions, and local cultural immersion can all be packaged together into travel itineraries tailored to the interests of Young Generations.

Bekasi Offers Alternatives for Urban Travel

The city of Bekasi and its surrounding areas are now home to a growing number of destinations gaining attention from young travellers. Options range widely from nature tourism sites to fully themed recreational attractions.

Bekasi Bamboo Forest provides lush, green natural space right in the middle of the urban area, while Sabana Delta Mas offers wide open landscapes unlike typical city surroundings.

Situ Rawa Gede is an option for visitors looking for lakeside waterfront atmosphere, while Trans Snow World Bekasi delivers indoor snow themed recreation experiences.

This variety gives travellers options to seek out a change of scenery without needing to travel far from Jakarta's greater metropolitan area. Every one of these destinations has the potential to offer far more than just a backdrop for photographs.

The rise of visual tourism presents an opportunity for both urban tourism development and growth of the creative economy in Bekasi.

“Instagrammable travel is not just about photos. When managed properly, good aesthetics can be the gateway to boost local economic activity and introduce previously little known destinations,” stated Yudhistira.

When developed consistently, this appeal has the potential to raise the Profile of lesser known travel spots. An increase in visitors also creates opportunities for local Business operators, including food vendors, creative product makers, and travel support services.

Aesthetics Must Go Hand In Hand With Sustainability

The growing popularity of visual tourism also brings new challenges. Destinations must ensure that spatial design and facility development do not come at the cost of the local environment or the quality of life for surrounding communities.

Sustainable management practices are critical to ensure that a location's appeal does not fade once the initial trend passes.

Public open spaces, natural Conservation areas, and community-based destinations require planning that balances environmental carrying capacity with visitor needs.

Yudhitia has expressed hope that the development of visual tourism in Bekasi will be paired with long term sustainable spatial planning. This way, destinations will not only serve the needs of digital content creation, but also improve the overall quality of the Travel Experience for everyone.

"With accurate integrated data and targeted regional planning, Bekasi is positioning itself as a leader in the urban tourism market across West Java, catering to a generation that values both beauty and genuine meaning in their travel," she concluded.

Ultimately, Generation Z is reshaping the face of Indonesian Tourism through their travel priorities, bringing together aesthetics, comfort, and authentic experience in every trip.
