Tourism trends among young generations in Indonesia are beginning to shift. Gen Z and Millennials no longer only chase popular photo spots to upload on social media. They are increasingly drawn to purposeful travel, authentic experiences, and direct interaction with local communities.

This shift is pushing the tourism industry to re-evaluate conventional travel packages. Holidays are no longer sufficient by only offering visits to a number of tourist attractions—they also need to deliver cultural experiences, connection with nature, and opportunities to build social connections.

The Indonesia Tourism Outlook report highlights cultural immersion and eco-friendly tourism as core components of global tourism trends.

Aligned with this, research by the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) in partnership with Euromonitor International, titled Tourism in Focus, notes that young travellers are becoming far more selective when choosing their Travel Experiences.

This demographic is even willing to spend more money for meaningful travel experiences, rather than purchasing luxury goods or expensive vehicles.

For this group, the value of a trip is not defined solely by the destination, but also by the personal stories and experiences lived while there.

Ni Made Ayu Marthini, Deputy for Marketing at the Ministry of Tourism, assesses that this shift is deeply tied to how young generations define the purpose of travel.

"Gen Z especially, they are searching for meaning. When they travel, the trip has to hold significance for them. That is what is transforming the kind of tourism experiences they seek," stated Ni Made Ayu Marthini.

Ayu gave mountain hiking as an example of this change. Where previously most travellers focused only on reaching the summit for the perfect photo, the full journey along the way is now also a major Draw.

Interactions with local guides, learning about surrounding community culture, and observing local biodiversity are now receiving far greater attention.

This shift also reflects growing interest in Experiential Tourism. Industry players must design activities rooted in local daily life, instead of only offering brief stops at well-known tourist locations.

Young Generations Seek Human Connection

Contrary to expectation, young people's constant immersion in digital technology has not erased their need for real, tangible experiences.

After growing accustomed to viewing destinations only through screens, many young travellers instead crave to feel the atmosphere of a place first-hand, meet new people, and understand the daily lives of local communities.

Studies on digital travel culture in Indonesia identify independent DIY travel as one of the main ways young people express their personal identity.

They want to build itineraries aligned with their own interests, choose their own destinations, and create experiences outside of standard mass tourism patterns.

Widespread social media travel content has made authenticity increasingly valuable. In an era where travel photos and videos are easily curated to appear flawless, unscripted spontaneous moments and genuine human interaction hold unique appeal.

This is exactly why Hidden Gem Destinations are growing in popularity among young travellers. Such locations allow visitors to discover unique atmospheres, while building one-of-a-kind personal travel stories.

Beyond just finding new locations, travel has also become a medium to recharge, find peace, and grow empathy for other cultures.

Personal memories and the connections formed with people along the way often become the most precious part of any trip.

New Opportunities For Indonesia's Tourism Industry

This shift in traveller preferences opens new opportunities for destinations and tourism operators across Indonesia. Village tourism, local tradition-based activities, sustainable nature travel, and community engagement experiences can all be developed to meet the needs of this young generation.

For example, local guides no longer only need to show directions or explain tourist sites. They can share local history, traditions, cuisine, and everyday community life. These kinds of experiences deliver added value for travellers while also creating economic opportunities for local communities.

That said, the rise of authentic travel trends must be balanced with responsibility towards the local environment and culture. Unmanaged growth in visitor numbers to hidden destinations risks placing unsustainable pressure on natural ecosystems.

For the Ministry of Tourism and industry stakeholders, the core challenge is to design more flexible, personalised, and sustainable travel products. Tour packages must provide space for visitors to participate directly, rather than only being moved from one attraction to the next.

Ultimately, this shift in youth tourism trends shows that holidays are increasingly viewed as an investment in experience. Travel photographs remain an important part of preserving memories, but purpose, human connection, and authentic stories now hold far greater weight in defining a good Travel Experience.
