Cristiano Ronaldo departs the Portugal national team with one of the most remarkable records in football history. Over 23 years representing his country, CR7 did not only score goals, but also set a series of achievements that will be exceptionally difficult for future generations to match.

Announced on 5 November 2026, Ronaldo's retirement brought an end to his long international journey with Portugal National Team. He closed his Selecao das Quinas career with 234 caps and 146 goals. Both figures currently stand as all-time world records for men's international football.

As per official UEFA data dated 5 November 2026, Ronaldo holds a 20-goal lead over Lionel Messi who sits second on the global international goalscorers list. His 234 appearances have also broken the previous all-time cap record previously held by Kuwait's Bader Al-Mutawa.

International Goals King & World Cup Legacy

Ronaldo first claimed the global international goals record when he surpassed Iran's Ali Daei in September 2021. Two goals against the Republic of Ireland took his tally to 111, making him the All-Time Top Goalscorer in men's international football at that point.

He would go on to extend this record to the final 146 goals. UEFA verifies Ronaldo scored for Portugal in every single calendar year across his entire international career, consistently for 23 straight years from 2004 through 2026.

The FIFA World Cup was another stage where Ronaldo etched his name in history. He featured in six consecutive tournament editions: 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022 and 2026. Only Lionel Messi has matched this appearance achievement.

Ronaldo remains the only player in history to score at six separate World Cup finals tournaments.

At the 2026 World Cup, Ronaldo netted three goals, bringing his total record at football's most prestigious global tournament to 11 goals from 27 matches played.

This tally makes him Portugal's All-Time Top World Cup Goalscorer, overtaking national legend Eusebio who previously held the mark with 9 goals.

UEFA European Championship Record Holder

At the UEFA European Championship, Ronaldo also holds an unmatched collection of records. He is the all-time most capped player at the tournament finals stage, with 30 appearances across six different editions.

Ronaldo also holds the all-time top goalscorer record for the European Championship finals with 14 goals. When including qualification matches, this total rises to 55 goals from 74 total appearances.

These individual records ran parallel to Portugal's historic triumph at Euro 2016, the first ever major international trophy in the country's national team history.

Ronaldo was a central figure throughout that winning campaign. Despite being forced off with injury early in the final against France, he continued to lead and encourage his teammates from the touchline until Portugal secured the 1-0 championship victory via Eder's late goal.

Three Major International Titles For Portugal

Alongside the Euro 2016 trophy, Ronaldo also lifted two UEFA Nations League titles. Portugal won the inaugural 2019 edition with a 1-0 final win over the Netherlands.

Six years later, Portugal retained the title. Ronaldo scored in the 2025 UEFA Nations League final against Spain, in a match that finished 2-2 before Portugal won 5-3 on penalties.

Ronaldo concluded his international career with three major senior titles for Portugal: Euro 2016, plus the 2019 and 2025 UEFA Nations League.

Club Records Complete Ronaldo's Career Legacy

Ronaldo's dominance was not limited to the Portugal national shirt. At club level he also holds numerous landmark records, most notably in the UEFA Champions League.

According to updated UEFA data published July 2026, Ronaldo is the all-time top goalscorer in Champions League history with 140 goals from 183 appearances. He also lifted the trophy five times: once with Manchester United and four times with Real Madrid.

His single-season record of 17 Champions League goals set in 2013/14 still remains unbeaten. Ronaldo also finished as the tournament's top goalscorer across seven separate seasons.

On individual honours, Ronaldo has won five Ballon d'Or awards, cementing his standing as one of the most decorated players in the entire history of modern football.

Following his international retirement, Ronaldo continues his professional playing career with Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia. But his legacy with Portugal is already permanently written: unmatched goals, appearance records, championship trophies, and a 23-year journey that completely redefined the standard of achievement for an international footballer.
