Malaysia and Singapore are not just general Favorite Destinations for Indonesian Tourists. These two neighboring countries also offer appealing options for Generation Z who want to enjoy short holidays, hunt for local cuisine, explore urban areas, and gain new experiences to share on social media.
For Gen Z, travel does not always have to be long or cost large amounts of money. Visiting iconic locations, trying regional specialties, discovering charming city corners, and immersing in local atmosphere can all form Memorable Holiday experiences.
This trend aligns with findings from the 2026 Jenius Study: Cross-Generational Travel Behavior, which involved 300 respondents through online surveys and in-depth interviews conducted from November 2025 to January 2026.

Gen Z Healing Trend: Why Is Mountain Hiking Becoming Increasingly Popular Among Young People?
The study found that Gen Z are heavily influenced by friend recommendations and social media when planning trips. They are far more flexible with their itineraries, and are willing to adjust plans entirely when they discover a location they consider more interesting.
Notably, Gen Z show significantly higher interest in travelling overseas compared to older generations. Among respondents' top international destinations, Singapore ranked in the top 5 alongside Japan, China, Thailand and Europe.
Chasing Experiences, Not Just Checking Off Locations
This shift in how Gen Z approach travel is visible in their activity choices. They do not only visit popular destinations — they actively seek out experiences that match their personal interests.
Research published in the Journal of Islamic Economics and Business in July 2026 examined the impact of short-form travel videos on TikTok towards Indonesian Gen Z travel intentions.
This study of 237 Gen Z TikTok users found that engagement with travel video content has a very strong effect on forming plans to visit a location. Ease of understanding information and the completeness of content presented also play a major role in building interest in a destination.
The research noted that Gen Z within this study sample allocated approximately 29% of their personal income for travel activities. This figure is specific to the study group, and does not represent the entire Indonesian Gen Z population.
This finding explains why destinations with many distinct spots, unique local cuisine and one-of-a-kind experiences easily make it onto young people's travel lists.
Malaysia and Singapore deliver exactly this combination. Kuala Lumpur offers Chinatown, Jalan Alor, Dataran Merdeka and KLCC Park, while Singapore is home to Merlion Park, the Marina Bay precinct, Little India and Gardens by the Bay.
Kuala Lumpur: For Urban Sightseeing And Food Trips
For Gen Z planning a short trip on a controlled budget, Kuala Lumpur is an excellent choice.
The Chinatown and Petaling Street area lets visitors wander open markets, browse souvenir shops, admire heritage architecture and sample a huge range of local street food. Travellers can also stroll around Dataran Merdeka or relax in the open green spaces of KLCC Park completely free of entry fees.
Food adventures can continue on Jalan Alor, famous for its long rows of eateries and street stalls. This area is perfect for visitors who want to try many different local dishes in one outing.
Travellers can also make full use of Kuala Lumpur's integrated MRT, LRT, monorail and Rapid KL bus network.
By combining walking tours, local food experiences and Public Transport, Kuala Lumpur makes an ideal short trip destination for groups of friends or couples.
Singapore: A Modern City With Plenty Of Free Spots
Singapore offers a different Travel Experience for Gen Z drawn to modern urban vibes, impressive architecture and well-maintained public spaces.
Merlion Park is an easily accessible spot to enjoy the Marina Bay skyline and take photos with the country's iconic landmark. Visitors can also explore Little India to experience the multicultural atmosphere, admire brightly coloured heritage buildings and try authentic regional food.
Another option is the Singapore Botanic Gardens, a listed UNESCO World Heritage Site. The main gardens can be visited for free, though separate entry fees apply for certain attractions within the grounds.
As evening falls, Supertree Grove at Gardens by the Bay becomes the perfect spot to watch the Garden Rhapsody light and music show.
Access to the Supertree Grove public area is completely free, making this an excellent choice for travellers looking for impressive visual attractions without extra costs.
Singapore also has an extensive MRT and bus network that makes travelling between districts simple. The distance-based fare system means transport costs can be easily adjusted to match travel routes.
Social Media Content And Budget Planning
There is no doubt that social media is one of the biggest travel inspiration sources for Gen Z. However, a destination's viral popularity does not have to mean expensive travel.
The 2026 Jenius Study recorded that social media is the primary itinerary reference for 35% of Gen Z respondents, almost matching Google Maps as the most used travel information source.
Because of this, young travellers can use online content to discover interesting locations and compare costs before departure. Always verify pricing, opening hours and transport access information from official sources however.
Proper budget planning is also critical to avoid unplanned overspending. Flight tickets, accommodation, food and transport costs should all be calculated together as a full travel budget.
At the end of the day, a trip to Malaysia or Singapore does not require visiting every famous tourist spot. Gen Z travellers can select just a few destinations that match their interests, plan an efficient route, and leave extra time to simply soak in the local atmosphere.
Even short trips can create lasting memories: from trying new food, stumbling on hidden city corners, to learning about local daily life.
