Football Megastar Cristiano Ronaldo has decided to end his long career journey with the Portugal national team. After over two decades wearing the Selecao das Quinas jersey, Ronaldo announced his retirement from International Football on Thursday, 5 November 2026.
This decision by the 41-year-old megastar closes one of the most influential careers in the history of international men's football. Ronaldo leaves Portugal holding the all-time records for most appearances and All-Time Top Goalscorer for the men's national side.
The announcement was delivered via a video post on his personal Instagram account. In his farewell message, Ronaldo stated that the time had come to pass on the national team's number 7 jersey to the next generation.

"Today the moment has arrived to return this national team jersey and captain's armband that belongs to all of us. For 23 years, it was both my greatest honour and responsibility to wear it, defend it, and carry it across stadiums all over the world. But now, it is time to hand it over to the next generation," stated Ronaldo.
Ronaldo made his international debut in August 2003 at the age of 18. Over 23 years representing Portugal, he recorded 234 senior caps and scored 146 goals.
According to UEFA data as of 5 November 2026, these figures place him at the very top of the all-time men's international goalscoring list. Lionel Messi sits in second place with 126 goals from 208 appearances, followed by Iran's Ali Daei with 108 goals.
Ronaldo also holds the record for the most international caps by any male footballer in history, surpassing the previous record held by Kuwait's Bader Al-Mutawa who finished his career with 196 appearances.
However, Ronaldo's legacy for Portugal is not measured only by statistics. He was captain when his nation lifted the 2016 European Championship, Portugal's first ever major international title.
This success continued with two UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025. In the 2025 final, Ronaldo scored as Portugal drew 2-2 against Spain before winning the match on penalties.
The FIFA World Cup also formed a core part of his international journey. Ronaldo appeared at six separate World Cup tournaments, from Germany 2006 through to North America 2026, making him the first player ever to score at six different World Cups.
At the 2026 tournament, Ronaldo contributed 3 goals, bringing his total World Cup tally to 11 goals. Portugal were eventually eliminated in the Round of 16 following a 0-1 defeat to eventual champions Spain.
Even with all the records he leaves behind, Ronaldo emphasised that the memories shared with the Portuguese people hold far greater meaning than any individual achievement.
"Goals will come and go, trophies will eventually sit in museums, and records will one day be broken. But there is one thing time can never erase: the place we hold in people's hearts," said Ronaldo.
He extended his gratitude to all former teammates, coaches, national team support staff, his family, and the Portuguese public who supported his career over more than two decades.
This retirement announcement follows public friction between Ronaldo and Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus. In late September, Ronaldo walked out of the national team training camp after not receiving the playing time he had expected.
The Portuguese Football Federation subsequently handed down a 30-day playing ban and a €255 fine. Ronaldo had already issued a public apology at the time, and had stated he remained willing to represent his country.
Nevertheless, no official statement has confirmed that this dispute was the primary reason for his retirement. Ronaldo ultimately chose to close his international chapter and pass responsibility to the next generation.
The Al Nassr captain's final appearance for Portugal came on 24 September 2026, in a 1-0 UEFA Nations League victory over Wales. He did not take the field for his nation again after that match.
The end of Ronaldo's international career marks a defining moment for Portugal. The number 7 shirt, synonymous with him for so many years, will now be carried forward by future players.
