The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) is preparing a special tribute for Cristiano Ronaldo after the global superstar announced the end of his international career. This initiative is formed as appreciation for Ronaldo's 23 years of dedicated service with the Portugal national team.
Ronaldo confirmed his retirement from the Selecao das Quinas via a video upload on his personal Instagram account on Thursday. The 41-year-old's decision brings to a close one of the most historic careers in International Football.
FPF responded to the announcement with plans for the dedicated honour ceremony. The federation has stated it will ensure Ronaldo's contributions receive recognition fitting of his achievements and the impact he has had on Portuguese football.

"It is our strong will and firm commitment to organise, plan, participate and be actively involved in a proper tribute for Cristiano Ronaldo's extraordinary career journey," read the official FPF statement.
As cited by BBC on Thursday, the federation also aims to create an opportunity for supporters to deliver their appreciation directly to the former Portugal captain.
The tribute is designed to be more than a formal farewell ceremony, it will also serve as a moment for the public to reflect on Ronaldo's journey with Portugal National Team.
"During this occasion, fans and all people of Portugal will be able to once again give their applause and celebrate a player who has given so very much to all of us."
Whilst the plans have been confirmed, FPF has not yet announced the date or exact format of the special tribute for Ronaldo.
Portugal is scheduled to play their next international fixtures in November 2026. There is currently no confirmation if the tribute ceremony will be held during this match window.
Ronaldo's Lasting Legacy For Portuguese Football
The planned tribute from FPF is rooted in Ronaldo's exceptional achievements while representing his nation. He made his international debut in August 2003 and competed at elite level for over two full decades.
Across this period, Ronaldo recorded 234 caps and scored 146 international goals. Both statistics make him the all-time record holder for appearances and All Time Top Goalscorer in the entire history of men's senior international football.
Ronaldo's impact also includes Portugal's three major international titles. He was a central figure as Portugal won Euro 2016, the country's very first major international trophy.
This success was followed by back to back UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025. With these three trophies, Ronaldo leaves a competitive legacy that will remain an indelible part of Portuguese football history.
Beyond statistics and silverware, Ronaldo was the public face of Portuguese football for 23 years. His influence has spanned generations of players and fans, whilst elevating his country's reputation on the global football stage.
Now following his international retirement, Ronaldo will receive this final official tribute. For Portugal, this moment is not just a farewell to a captain, but a celebration of one of the greatest legends in the entire history of their national sport.
