Manchester City secured another Premier League victory after edging out Coventry City by a narrow 1-0 scoreline at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, 5 September 2026.

Erling Haaland's solitary goal proved the difference in this fixture. The three additional points keep Manchester City at the top of the league table, having collected nine points from three matches played.

Meanwhile, Coventry City remain rooted at the bottom of the standings, still without a single win from their opening three games of the campaign.

Coventry actually created the first dangerous chance of the match. In the 8th minute, Taiwo Awoniyi found space inside the penalty box before firing a shot that drifted just wide of the left post of Manchester City's goal.

Manchester City then began to take control of the game. Haaland had an opportunity in the 16th minute with a strike aimed at the bottom right corner, only for Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth to pull off a solid save.

City continued to ramp up the pressure. Rayan Cherki came close to breaking the deadlock minutes later with a powerful close-range effort, but his strike crashed against the right goalpost.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 26th minute. A cross from Semenyo landed perfectly inside the six-yard box, where Haaland met the ball with a headed finish. Rushworth was unable to keep the effort out, putting City 1-0 ahead.

Haaland had another chance to extend the lead just before half time. The Norwegian striker found room to unleash a shot, but Rushworth reacted quickly to make a crucial stop.

The 1-0 scoreline for Manchester City remained unchanged as the first half came to an end.

After the restart, Manchester City continued pushing for a second goal. Iliman Ndiaye got on the end of a cross with a headed attempt, but his effort sailed over the crossbar.

Haaland thought he had scored his second in the 58th minute, but his celebrations were cut short. The referee disallowed the goal after ruling the striker was in an offside position.

Coventry then upped their attacking intensity as they searched for an equaliser. Loum Tchaouna broke into the penalty area following neat combination play with Awoniyi and Caleb Yirenkyi.

Unfortunately for the visitors, the chance went unconverted. Tchaouna's low drive was well parried by Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

As the match entered its closing stages, Coventry kept applying pressure. Ellis Simms got a sight of goal from close range, but Donnarumma showed sharp reflexes once again to deny the effort.

Coventry threatened again in the 82nd minute. Bobby Thomas got a header away from inside the box, but he could not direct the attempt on target.

Manchester City successfully held on to their lead until the full time whistle blew. Haaland's goal was the only difference between the sides, as City claimed all three points from the fixture.

This result maintains Manchester City's perfect start to the season, with nine points from three matches. Coventry on the other hand suffer another defeat, and remain anchored at the very bottom of the league table.
