Travelling abroad does not always require a large budget. Malaysia and Singapore, two Favourite Destinations for Indonesian Travellers, offer a wide range of activities that can be enjoyed without spending excessive amounts of money.
The key lies in how you plan your trip. Choosing affordable accommodation, using Public Transport, along with visiting public open spaces and Free Attractions will help travellers keep their expenses under control.
Latest data from the Ministry of Tourism shows that Malaysia remains the top overseas travel destination for Indonesian Travellers. As of September 2026, Malaysia accounted for 28.03 percent of all international trips made by Indonesian nationals, while Singapore placed third with a 12.96 percent share.

These two countries have distinct Tourism characteristics. Kuala Lumpur offers a mix of shopping districts, local cuisine, and historical landmarks. Meanwhile, Singapore is well known for its modern urban planning, themed parks, and well-integrated Public Transport network.
So how can you enjoy both these destinations without blowing your travel budget?
1. Choose Accommodation Based On Transport Accessibility
Your accommodation location is one of the biggest factors that will determine your total spending during a trip. A cheap room rate will not actually save you money if the property is located far from transit stations or main tourist areas.
In Kuala Lumpur, the Chinatown and Petaling Street areas are good options for travellers who want to explore the city centre while enjoying local food. This district also provides easy access to multiple historical sites and shopping locations.
Meanwhile, Little India in Singapore is worth considering, as it offers a wide variety of accommodation and dining options. This area is connected to the MRT network, allowing travellers to reach all parts of the city without relying on taxis for every trip.
2. Make Use Of Public Transport
Using public transport is the most practical way to cut down on travel costs.
In Kuala Lumpur, travellers can use the MRT, LRT, monorail, and Rapid KL bus services. One highly recommended option is the 3-day Rapid Kembara Pass, priced at RM55.
This pass grants unlimited travel across all eligible Rapid KL services, including the MRT, LRT, monorail, BRT, main bus routes, and MRT feeder buses.
Note that travellers will still need to account for the cost of a Touch 'n Go card and the required minimum balance on the card.
Singapore also has an extensive MRT, LRT and bus network that makes travelling between districts very convenient.
Adult card fares start at S$1.28 for trips up to 3.2 kilometres, and increase progressively with travel distance.
This fare rate applies for card payments. Travellers are advised to prepare an eligible payment method, as cash single tickets are significantly more expensive.
3. Seek Out Local Street Food
Trying local specialty food is an essential part of any trip. That said, you do not need to dine exclusively at famous restaurants or shopping mall food outlets.
In Malaysia, street food stalls can be found throughout Petaling Street and Jalan Alor. In Singapore meanwhile, travellers can visit hawker centres which serve a huge variety of local dishes.
Opting for these local food hubs is an excellent alternative to enjoy authentic cuisine without allocating a large food budget.
Travellers can also manage their spending by ordering meals according to their actual needs, rather than just visiting eating spots that are currently trending on social media.
4. Build Your Itinerary Around Free Attractions
Both Malaysia and Singapore have countless interesting locations that can be visited with no entry fee.
In Kuala Lumpur, you can start your trip by wandering around Dataran Merdeka and viewing the historic Sultan Abdul Samad Building.
From there, you can continue on to Petaling Street to experience the atmosphere of Chinatown and try local street food.
Another option is Perdana Botanical Garden, a peaceful green space right in the middle of the city. Tourism Malaysia lists this garden as a completely free public destination.
In Singapore, Merlion Park makes a great starting point to enjoy the Marina Bay skyline and take photos with the country's iconic mascot. This location is open 24 hours a day for the public with no admission charge.
Travellers can also visit the Singapore Botanic Gardens. This UNESCO World Heritage Site has free general entry for all visitors, though the separate National Orchid Garden located within the grounds charges an admission fee.
As evening falls, the Supertree Grove at Gardens by the Bay is an excellent choice. This public area has no entry fee, and hosts the Garden Rhapsody light and music show every night.
The regular shows are held at 19:45 and 20:45 local time, though schedules may be adjusted during special event periods.
5. Do Not Fixate Only On Cheap Flight Tickets
Low airfare may look appealing, but it is not the only cost you need to calculate. Expenses for accommodation, food, transport and tourist activities will actually make up the majority of your total trip cost.
For this reason, travellers should always calculate the full projected cost of the entire trip before finalising a destination. A slightly cheaper Plane Ticket will almost never result in a cheaper overall holiday.
Budget Travel Can Still Be Enjoyable
Both Malaysia and Singapore offer fantastic travel experiences for Indonesian visitors. Both countries also have well-developed public transport systems and free public attractions that can be used to keep expenses low.
With proper planning, travellers can fully enjoy their trip without missing out on great experiences. By choosing strategically located accommodation, trying authentic local food, and planning efficient travel routes, Overseas Holidays can still be thoroughly enjoyable even when working with a limited budget.
