Kimi Antonelli Wins the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix, Pit Stop Strategy Becomes the Key

Kimi Antonelli emerged as the winner of the 2026 Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix, held at the Madring Sur Circuit in Madrid on Sunday. The Mercedes driver finished ahead of Max Verstappen from Red Bull and Lando Norris who represented McLaren.

This victory stands as a critical result for Antonelli in the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship title battle. According to the official Formula 1 website, the 20-year-old driver has now consolidated his position at the top of the standings with an 81-point lead.

The Spanish Grand Prix was fiercely contested from the very start. Norris, who began the race from pole position, attempted to defend his lead while Antonelli applied constant pressure searching for an opening.

However, Antonelli did not need to perform a direct overtake to take over first position. The deployment of the Virtual Safety Car (VSC) instead handed Mercedes an advantage and completely altered the drivers' strategic calculations.

Position changes became clearly visible once drivers began their pit stops. Antonelli exited the pit lane in a favourable position. In contrast, a slower tyre change cost Norris track position, dropping him behind both Antonelli and Verstappen.

After returning to the track, Antonelli also encountered issues with his car's steering system. Despite this, the problem did not cause him to lose control over the race progression.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc was one driver who initially gained an advantage by choosing not to pit immediately during the VSC period. This strategy could not be sustained long term however. Leclerc made his pit stop on lap 48, which further secured Antonelli's lead at the front.

Antonelli successfully maintained his pace all the way to the finish line. This result earned him his eighth victory of the 2026 season, while also greatly improving his chances of locking in the World Championship title.

Behind him, Verstappen had to settle for second position, while Norris completed the race in third place.

Antonelli's Mercedes teammate George Russell also delivered a positive result by finishing fifth. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton was unable to finish the race after suffering a failure on the braking system of his Ferrari car.

Liam Lawson was the next Red Bull driver to cross the finish line. He ended the race in sixth position, followed by Alpine's Franco Colapinto in seventh place.

Oscar Piastri rounded out McLaren's results with an eighth place finish. The final two spots inside the top 10 were taken by Arvid Lindblad from Racing Bulls and Nico Hulkenberg representing Audi.

From the Williams team, only Alex Albon managed to complete the race. Albon had to settle for 15th position.

Meanwhile, four drivers were recorded as non-finishers at the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix. Carlos Sainz failed to finish, as did Sergio Perez who experienced issues with his car's cooling system.

Lance Stroll also was forced to end his race early due to brake problems. Hamilton became the final driver added to the retirement list when his braking system fault forced him out of the event prematurely.
