The title battle between Marc Marquez and Jorge Martin for the 2026 MotoGP world championship has entered a new phase at Sepang Circuit. However, the first Free practice session (FP1) of MotoGP Malaysia this Friday painted a stark contrasting picture for the two title contenders.

Marquez demonstrated outright dominance with Ducati Lenovo. The Spanish rider set a fastest lap time of 1 minute 58.912 seconds, becoming the only rider on the entire grid to break the 1 minute 59 second barrier.

By contrast, Martin was still struggling to find his optimal race pace, finishing the session down in 20th place out of 22 total competing riders.

The Aprilia Racing rider made his return to the track following a fractured right wrist Injury.

While FP1 results do not ultimately dictate the outcome of this race Weekend, they act as an early critical indicator for both riders. Marquez arrived carrying raw proven pace, while Martin is still working to rebuild his competitive form after his injury layoff.

Marquez Leads By Almost Half A Second

Marquez delivered a convincing performance right from the start of the session, even with Sepang's track surface still damp after heavy rainfall the previous day. He set his benchmark lap time and pulled a clear gap over the rest of the field.

Marco Bezzecchi of Aprilia Racing and Pedro Acosta of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing finished as Marquez's closest challengers. Both riders recorded an identical lap time of 1 minute 59.386 seconds, exactly 0.474 seconds adrift of the leader.

This advantage underlines Marquez's preparedness heading into the 19th round of MotoGP 2026. The rider nicknamed 'The Baby Alien' also secured an early psychological edge by topping the timesheets in the very first session of the weekend.

KTM showed strong form at Sepang, with the Austrian manufacturer placing three riders inside the top 5: Acosta in 3rd, Enea Bastianini in 4th, and Brad Binder in 5th position.

Bastianini posted a lap time of 1 minute 59.688 seconds, 0.776 seconds behind Marquez, with Binder following just behind at a 0.825 second gap.

Further down the order, Franco Morbidelli finished 6th, followed by Alex Marquez in 7th and Johann Zarco in 8th. Fabio Di Giannantonio took 9th place, while rookie rider Diogo Moreira rounded out the top 10.

All eyes were firmly fixed on Martin for this opening session. The reigning 2024 MotoGP World Champion has only just returned to action after sustaining his right wrist fracture, with his physical condition a major unknown factor for competition at Sepang.

During FP1, Martin completed just 12 laps across two separate runs out on track. His best recorded lap time was 2 minutes 00.747 seconds, a full 1.835 seconds slower than Marquez's leading time.

20th place is far from an ideal result for Martin, especially as he fights to chase the world championship title. This performance must however be viewed in full context of his ongoing physical recovery from injury.

Martin was officially cleared to continue the race weekend after undergoing follow-up medical checks immediately after FP1 concluded. This ruling keeps him in contention to improve his performance across the remaining sessions.

Narrow 10 Point Gap Heats Up Title Fight

The head-to-head battle between Marquez and Martin is the central storyline of the 2026 MotoGP Malaysia round. Only 10 points separate the pair in the current Championship Standings, with Marquez holding the top spot.

This means every single session run at Sepang carries major championship significance. Marquez will be aiming to defend his advantage while avoiding costly mistakes, while Martin will need to maximise every minute on track to close the gap.

For Martin, the biggest challenge is not just beating Marquez, but first confirming that his injured wrist can hold up to the full physical demands of race pace. Conversely, Marquez has a clear opportunity to extend his championship lead if he can maintain this consistent form.

FP1 is only the very first step of the weekend. The true battle remains wide open, and all attention will now turn to whether Martin can recover his pace, and How Marquez responds, through the remaining sessions at Sepang.
