FIFA Matchday November: Match against Jordan cancelled, John Herdman conducts player selection for the Indonesia National Football Team.

The Indonesia National Team training camp being held in Bali for November 2026 is not merely a replacement for the cancelled friendly match against Jordan. This agenda also serves as an opportunity for John Herdman to expand his Player Selection pool ahead of competition at the 2027 AFC Asian Cup.

With the Jordan fixture cancelled, the Garuda Squad lost the chance to benchmark their capabilities through official international match play. Even so, Herdman will still utilise this FIFA Matchday window to monitor player progress and evaluate the overall team composition.

Sumardji, Chairman of the National Team Board (BTN) previously confirmed that this November international window will be used to track players in contention for a spot on the 2027 Asian Cup squad.

He explained that all called up players will receive close oversight from the coaching staff. This will allow Herdman and his team to properly assess whether these athletes meet the standard required to compete at senior national team level.

"To put it simply, these are players that we need to observe far more closely right now, so we can properly confirm that this player is truly worthy of representing the national team at the upcoming 2027 Asian Cup," he added.

Before the decision to run the Bali training camp was announced, BTN had opened discussions with the Hong Kong Football Association to secure a replacement opponent for Jordan. However, Sumardji confirmed no official response had been received from the Hong Kong governing body.

"As of this moment, we followed up with the Hong Kong side once again last night, but we still have not received any formal reply," Sumardji stated.

With available time dwindling, PSSI ultimately made the decision to repurpose the entire November schedule as a match-free training camp. For this programme, Herdman has assembled a mixed group combining established core national team players alongside a number of new prospects.

In an official PSSI release, Herdman confirmed this camp is structured to strengthen squad depth, raise overall playing standard, and build a more solid foundational structure for the national team.

"This gives us the chance to evaluate their full potential, deepen tactical understanding, and strengthen working chemistry between every player in the national team setup," said Herdman.

This player evaluation opportunity carries critical importance, as Indonesia will face extremely tough competition at the 2027 Asian Cup. The official draw conducted by AFC in May 2026 placed Garuda in Group F alongside Japan, Qatar and Thailand.

Japan stands as one of the dominant powers in Asian Football, holding four previous Asian Cup championship titles.

Meanwhile Qatar enter the tournament as the reigning back-to-back champion, having won both the 2019 and 2023 editions. Thailand will be a familiar opponent for Indonesia, with the two nations sharing a long historic regional rivalry in Southeast Asia.

Indonesia has been granted an extended preparation window after the AFC announced a schedule shift for the tournament. Originally planned to run 7 January 2027 to 5 February 2027, the Asian Cup is now provisionally scheduled to take place between 23 December 2027 and 21 January 2028.

The AFC stated this schedule adjustment was made in response to evolving regional circumstances, logistical constraints and travel disruption. The revised tournament dates are still awaiting formal FIFA approval.

This postponement grants Herdman extra time to develop the squad. However this extended window also requires consistent, disciplined selection processes, particularly to ensure selected players are able to properly execute the team's tactical system.

The Bali training camp forms one key stage in this ongoing process. Free from the pressure of official fixtures, Herdman is able to dedicate full focus to tactical comprehension, on-pitch player communication, and fostering healthy competition for places in the final Garuda squad.
