Ducati Lenovo rider Marc Marquez has once again proven he has not lost his touch as one of MotoGP's finest competitors. After navigating a long difficult period recovering from extended injury, the Spanish rider is now on the brink of claiming his 8th premier class world championship title.
Marquez's climb to the top of the 2026 MotoGP Standings was no overnight achievement. He had to battle through multiple challenging seasons before rediscovering his peak form.
A right arm injury sustained in 2020 became the turning point of his career. He underwent a series of surgical procedures and was forced to miss a large number of races, with many at the time questioning his future in MotoGP.

However Marquez refused to give up. After ending his long-standing partnership with Honda, he began a new chapter with Gresini Racing for the 2024 season.
This decision to leave Honda opened an entirely new phase of his career. Marquez claimed his first premier class Grand Prix victory in 1043 days at the Aragon Grand Prix.
He concluded the 2024 season in 3rd place overall with 3 race wins, a result that signalled Marquez was finally regaining his race pace and competitive confidence.
Ducati Returns Marquez To The Top
For the 2025 season, Marquez was recruited to ride for the factory Ducati Lenovo works team. This move immediately triggered a massive shift in his career trajectory.
Marquez dominated the entire 2025 campaign, securing 11 Grand Prix victories. He wrapped up his 7th MotoGP world championship after finishing 2nd at the Japanese Grand Prix held at Motegi.
This title ended a six year wait, his last championship having come back in 2019. With this victory he also equalled Valentino Rossi's record of seven premier class world titles.
Unfortunately the 2025 season did not go entirely smoothly. Marquez suffered an injury in a collision with Marco Bezzecchi at the Indonesian Grand Prix, forcing him to end his season early to undergo rehabilitation.
Even so, winning the championship with Ducati confirmed that Marquez had once again established himself as one of the leading title contenders.
Seven Victories In The 2026 Season
Marquez carried this strong form into the 2026 season. As of the Malaysia Grand Prix on 1 November, he has recorded seven race wins and accumulated 399 championship points.
His victory at Sepang was a special milestone: it marked Marquez's 80th premier class Grand Prix win. He now holds a 44 point advantage over Jorge Martin, and a 67 point lead over Marco Bezzecchi.
Official MotoGP statistics show Marquez now has 80 premier class wins, and 106 total Grand Prix victories across all categories. He also holds nine world championship titles across three different classes: MotoGP, Moto2 and the 125cc category.
These numbers tell the story of a rider who once hit professional rock bottom, but fought his way all the way back to the very top of the sport.
Marquez has been one of the most consistent riders throughout the 2026 MotoGP season. Seven wins from 16 completed rounds gives him an extremely strong position to defend his world title.
Chasing An 8th MotoGP World Championship
Should he secure the 2026 championship, Marquez will hold eight premier class world titles. This would move him past seven-time champion Valentino Rossi, and equal Giacomo Agostini's all-time record for most premier class world championships.
Marquez needs just one more title to match this historic record. His first opportunity to seal the 2026 championship will come at the Qatar Grand Prix, hosted at the Lusail International Circuit on 6-8 November.
He cannot afford to drop his focus however. Both Jorge Martin and Marco Bezzecchi still hold a mathematical chance of closing the gap, even though both riders are currently a significant distance behind in the standings.
For Marquez, this eighth title is about far more than just another trophy. It will stand as the ultimate confirmation of his career comeback, after years battling injury, repeated surgeries, team changes and one of the darkest periods of his professional life.
