Marc Marquez has his first opportunity to seal the 2026 MotoGP World Championship title at the Lusail Circuit, Qatar. However, winning the main race alone will not be enough. The Ducati Lenovo rider will need to extend his points gap over his rivals to an unassailable margin ahead of the final two rounds of the season.
Marquez currently leads the Standings on 399 points following his victory at the Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang Circuit on 1 November. He holds a 44 point advantage over Jorge Martin, who has 355 points.
Marco Bezzecchi sits in third place with 332 points, 67 points behind Marquez. Meanwhile, Pedro Acosta occupies fourth position on 295 points.

With three rounds remaining, there is still room for shifts in the championship battle. Nevertheless, Marquez holds a far stronger position than his competitors, boasting both a points lead and a greater number of Grand Prix victories this season.
Minimum Required Gap: 74 Points
According to calculations published by Crash.net after the Malaysian GP, Marquez needs to stretch his advantage over Jorge Martin to 74 points in order to secure the title before the final two rounds.
Why 74 points? Following the Qatar Grand Prix, the season will continue with the Portuguese and Valencia Grands Prix. Each MotoGP race weekend awards a maximum of 37 points per rider: 12 points from the Sprint Race and 25 points from the main Grand Prix.
This means a total maximum of 74 points are available across the remaining two rounds. If Marquez holds a 74 point lead after Qatar, Martin will be mathematically eliminated from title contention. Marquez also holds the tiebreaker advantage for most Grand Prix wins in the event both riders finish the season level on points.
However, the championship calculations do not only account for Martin. Bezzecchi still retains a mathematical chance of challenging for the title. The Italian rider has claimed five Grand Prix wins this season, while Marquez has already recorded seven victories.
Marquez will require a 75 point lead over Bezzecchi if he does not win the Qatar GP. If Marquez takes victory in the main race at Lusail, a 74 point gap will be sufficient, as he holds the wins tiebreaker.
In practical terms, Marquez needs to outscore Jorge Martin by 30 points across the full Qatar race weekend. Against Bezzecchi, he needs to finish 8 points ahead, or just 7 points ahead if he wins the main Grand Prix.
Jorge Martin Holds The Key To The Title Battle
Jorge Martin's situation is the critical wildcard in these championship calculations. The Aprilia Racing rider suffered a wrist injury in a crash during the Australian MotoGP round.
Martin attempted to return to competition in Malaysia, but his physical condition prevented him from completing the race weekend, and he withdrew prior to qualifying.
Martin's absence handed Marquez a major standings boost, with the Sepang victory extending the gap between the pair to 44 points.
Martin is still expected to attempt to compete in Qatar provided his injury allows. His presence will have a major impact on the championship mathematics, particularly if he is able to score points in both the Sprint Race and main Grand Prix.
At the same time, Bezzecchi remains a threat that cannot be dismissed. The Aprilia rider has taken five Grand Prix wins this campaign and sits just 67 points adrift of Marquez.
The Final Three Rounds Will Decide The Championship
The Qatar MotoGP round will be held 6-8 November at the Lusail International Circuit. The Sprint Race is scheduled for Saturday, with the main Grand Prix taking place on Sunday.
Following Qatar, the championship will move to Portugal on 20-22 November, before concluding at Valencia on 27-29 November.
This means even if Marquez is unable to wrap up the title in Qatar, he will still have two further opportunities. His 44 point buffer is a huge advantage, but consistent results will remain critical.
Marquez has already demonstrated his consistent form this season with seven Grand Prix victories. Now, his challenge is to convert this dominance into his eighth career World Championship title.
