The postponement of AFC Asian Cup 2027 has reshaped the preparation roadmap for Indonesia National Football Team. Originally scheduled to run from 7 January 2027 to 5 February 2027, the tournament will now be held between 23 December 2027 and 21 January 2028. This calendar adjustment gives the Garuda Squad nearly one full extra year to refine their squad strength ahead of the competition hosted in Saudi Arabia.
Sumardji, Chairman of the Indonesian National Teams Board (BTN), views this schedule change positively. According to him, the extended preparation window allows the coaching staff to improve the team's readiness while also running more thorough scouting for players eligible to be called up to the squad.
"Yes. If we look at the upsides of this Asian Cup postponement, first of all this works in our favour. We will be able to run much better preparation processes, and our scouting and analysis work for prospective call-up players will also be far more comprehensive," Sumardji stated on Friday.

He added that this delay will allow Indonesia's national team to arrive at the Asian Cup in far better prepared condition.
The benefits for Indonesia are not limited to extra training time alone. The coaching team now also has wider room to evaluate player consistency, identify backup options for every position, and build proper squad depth.
This is a critical factor, as Indonesia will face opponents with vastly different experience levels and playing styles during the group stage.
PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir also stated that this postponement opens up opportunities for Indonesia to improve their performance through a full calendar of international fixtures throughout 2027.
"This was an agreement reached by all participating nations, so we must respect and follow it. For our part, this is beneficial for Indonesia, as we now have far longer to prepare," Erick remarked.
Erick also pointed out multiple international match windows that the national team can utilise to build up their readiness.
The March and June 2027 FIFA windows can be used to raise team performance levels, before Indonesia enters the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers in September, followed by additional international match windows in October and November.
"With this schedule, we have March and June to develop the team's performance. On top of that we will have World Cup Qualifiers starting September, then the October and November windows. This means the team can build momentum continuously without long, disruptive breaks," explained Erick.
This full fixture calendar means national team preparations will not be restricted only to training camps.
Indonesia can use these international matches to test their tactical development, measure their performance against different opposition profiles, and evaluate squad compositions well before the tournament kicks off.
The first opportunity to make use of this extra preparation time will come during the November 2026 FIFA Matchday window.
After the planned fixture against Jordan on 13 November was cancelled due to security concerns across the Middle East region, PSSI has replaced this agenda with a 7-day national team training camp based in Bali, starting 9 November.
Sumardji confirmed that the National Teams Board still intends to use this period to monitor players who have lighter match schedules with their respective clubs.
Head coach John Herdman is planning to call up a mixed squad consisting of established core players alongside new prospects, to allow the coaching staff to assess their potential up close.
As of the latest available updates, the full list of called up players and any replacement friendly opponents have not yet been officially announced.
Even with the benefit of extended preparation time, Indonesia still faces a major challenge at the Asian Cup. The official draw placed Jay Idzes and his teammates in Group F, alongside Japan, Qatar and Thailand.
Indonesia will open their group stage campaign against Japan, one of the undisputed top powers of Asian Football.
Reigning 2023 Asian Cup champions Qatar will pose a formidable test, while Thailand remains a familiar regional rival that has consistently proven difficult for Indonesia. This line up of opponents requires the Garuda squad to arrive with full tactical, physical and mental readiness.
Indonesia will enter this tournament with momentum from the 2023 AFC Asian Cup held in Qatar, where the Garuda squad recorded their best ever tournament performance by qualifying for the Round of 16. This experience provides a foundation to set higher targets for the upcoming edition.
The AFC officially announced the schedule change on 3 November 2026, following coordination with the local organising committee and the Saudi Arabian Football Federation.
This decision was taken in response to ongoing developments across the Middle East region, including significant logistical complexities and travel disruptions. The AFC has stated that the revised dates will be submitted to FIFA for formal approval.
For the Indonesia National Team, this Asian Cup postponement is far more than just a calendar adjustment. This extra time will only deliver value if PSSI and the coaching staff are able to convert it into structured preparation programmes, high quality match fixtures, and proper Player Selection processes.
The opportunity has been presented. Now the task ahead is to ensure that when the tournament finally begins, the Garuda squad will truly be ready.
