Portugal National Team enters a new chapter after Cristiano Ronaldo officially concluded his international career. The retirement of the 41-year old player closes a 23-year long journey, while simultaneously opening space for the next generation to take over key roles within Selecao das Quinas.

One day after Ronaldo's retirement announcement on 5 November 2026, Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus released the squad list for the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures. A total of 28 players were called up, including 7 new faces that mark the first step of the national team's regeneration process.

Ronaldo's absence is the single largest change to the Portugal squad. For over two decades, the Al Nassr forward was not just the team's primary goalscoring outlet, but also the central figure that shaped the national team's playing identity and competitive mentality.

His final career statistics are nearly unmatched. Official FIFA and UEFA records confirm Ronaldo earned 234 senior caps and scored 146 goals for Portugal. Both figures stand as all-time world records for male international footballers.

Ronaldo made his international debut in August 2003. He went on to captain Portugal to their Euro 2016 title, as well as lifting the UEFA Nations League trophy in both 2019 and 2025.

He also made history as the first male player ever to score at six consecutive FIFA World Cup editions, spanning from 2006 through 2026.

Now, Jorge Jesus is preparing Portugal for life without the global megastar. Rather than only retaining the existing established squad, Jesus is also granting opportunities for multiple young players to compete for positions in the main first team.

The seven new names called up are Alberto Costa, Antonio Silva, Mateus Fernandes, Carlos Forbs, Geovany Quenda, Rodrigo Mora and Gustavo Varela.

Out of this group, Alberto Costa and Gustavo Varela have received their very first ever call up to the Portugal senior national team.

Meanwhile, Quenda and Mora have previously been included in senior national team camps, but are yet to make their official competitive international debut.

The inclusion of these players confirms Portugal is beginning to build a wider player pool ahead of upcoming international competitions.

There are also notable omissions from this squad. Francisco Conceicao is unavailable serving a 3-match UEFA suspension after being shown a Red Card during the fixture against Norway.

Nuno Mendes was not called up due to injury, while Goncalo Inacio was left out for tactical selection reasons by Jorge Jesus.

Amidst this regeneration process, Portugal still retains core experienced players that will form the backbone of the team.

Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Ruben Dias, Joao Cancelo and other senior squad members are expected to take on greater responsibility, both leading attacking build up play and maintaining the team's tactical stability.

The first official test of the post-Ronaldo era will be two UEFA Nations League matches in November. Portugal will host Denmark on 14 November, before travelling away to face Wales on 17 November.

Portugal have the opportunity to finish the group stage with a perfect unbeaten record. They currently top Group A4 with 12 points from 4 matches, having recorded four straight wins.

Denmark sit in 2nd place with 6 points, while Wales and Norway are tied on 3 points each.

Portugal had already secured qualification to the Quarter Finals following their 2-1 victory over Norway on 4 October. However, just one additional point from the remaining two matches will confirm them as undisputed group winners.

This scenario gives Jorge Jesus ideal room to test different squad lineups in the post-Ronaldo era, while also assessing how well the young players can adapt to the physical and mental demands of International Football.

Ronaldo's departure leaves a very large void, particularly for consistent goalscoring output and on-pitch leadership. That said, Portugal are not rebuilding entirely from scratch.

They still retain their core group of proven experienced players, an emerging Young Generation now being given senior opportunities, and an established winning foundation as 2016 European champions and two-time Nations League winners.

A new era for Selecao das Quinas has begun. Jorge Jesus' challenge is not to find a direct one-for-one replacement for Ronaldo, but to build a cohesive team that plays with collective strength and forges its own distinct new identity.
