The postponement of the 2027 AFC Asian Cup to December 2027 opens up new opportunities for the Indonesia National Football Team. Aside from gaining nearly 11 extra months to finalize the squad, the Garuda Squad may also face changes to the Group F match order, where they are grouped with Japan, Qatar and Thailand.
The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) announced the rescheduling of the 2027 Asian Cup on 3 November 2026. The tournament, which was originally set to take place from 7 January to 5 February 2027 in Saudi Arabia, has been proposed to be held instead from 23 December 2027 through 21 January 2028.
Unprecedented circumstances across the Middle East region, logistical complexities, and travel disruptions were cited as the primary considerations for this postponement. The revised schedule will next be submitted to FIFA for formal approval.

2027 Asian Cup Postponed: Here Are the Impacts This Has on the Indonesian National Team's Preparations
For Indonesia, this calendar adjustment is not simply a delay to their chance to perform on Asia's biggest football stage. There are strategic opportunities that can be leveraged to build a more competitive team, as well as develop a different approach to navigating the Group F competition.
Group F Schedule May Be Revised
Prior to the postponement, Indonesia already had a confirmed group stage match schedule. Under the original AFC timetable, Garuda was scheduled to face Japan on 11 January 2027, Qatar on 16 January, and Thailand on 20 January.
However, the shifted tournament timeline means this original schedule will need to be adjusted.
Football Analyst Ronny Pangemanan, also known as Bung Ropan, stated that the AFC will likely redraw the match schedules for all participating nations, including Indonesia. These changes may affect not just match dates, but also the order of opponents that each team will face.
"The AFC will be revising the full Match Schedule for every team competing at the Asian Cup, including Indonesia," stated Bung Ropan during the Talk With Me ITSMe podcast.
He expressed hope that Indonesia would open their Group F campaign against Thailand, before facing Qatar and Japan later in the group stage.
According to Bung Ropan, this scenario would work in Indonesia's favour, as it would allow the team to secure points early before taking on the two stronger Asian Football powerhouses.
That said, no official decision has yet been made by the AFC regarding match order adjustments. The original group draw will not be repeated, meaning Indonesia remains placed in Group F alongside Japan, Qatar and Thailand. Full confirmation of the revised match dates and order is still pending an official announcement from the AFC.
Opportunity For Player Recovery And Squad Strengthening
One of the biggest advantages of this postponement is the additional preparation time available to finalise the team roster. The coaching staff now have an extended window to rehabilitate injured players, improve squad fitness levels, and build greater squad depth.
Bung Ropan noted that this extended window is particularly valuable for players who have not been able to perform at peak condition recently.
"This delay gives us a longer preparation period, which will allow us to build a much better, more cohesive team. We may also see additional diaspora players join the squad during this time," he explained.
He also acknowledged the possibility of new players being added to the squad, including Taisei Marukawa who was discussed during the podcast. As of this time however, there is no official confirmation regarding any new player additions for Indonesia's Asian Cup campaign.
Football Analyst Firzie Idris also highlighted positive aspects of the postponement. He noted that the nearly 11 month extension provides critical time to allow players recovering from long term injuries to return to full fitness.
Idris specifically referenced the situation of player Miliano, who is expected to provide a major contribution to the Indonesia National Team once fully recovered.
With a fully fit and available squad, Indonesia will have far greater selection options across every position. This is a critical foundation, given the calibre of opposition presented by Japan, Qatar and Thailand.
Friendly Match Planning Becomes Key Priority For PSSI
Beyond squad development, this additional time also gives the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) the opportunity to overhaul the national team's international friendly match programme.
Prior to the postponement, Indonesia had faced significant difficulties arranging high quality friendly opposition, amid ongoing security uncertainty across the Middle East region.
Firzie Idris stated that the AFC should have made this scheduling decision earlier, having taken into account the geopolitical developments that were already threatening to disrupt major sporting events.
Now, PSSI and the national coaching team have sufficient time to develop a structured, targeted friendly match programme. Preparing to face Japan, Qatar and Thailand will require test matches against opposition of a comparable standard.
That said, this extra time does not automatically guarantee improved preparation for Indonesia. PSSI must properly utilise the international match calendar, select appropriate friendly opposition, and maintain competitive momentum for all squad players.
Momentum To Chase A Round of 16 Spot
The potential adjustment to the group match order has made the battle in Group F all the more compelling to follow.
Bung Ropan believes that opening against Thailand would be a highly favourable scenario for Indonesia. This is especially true given the Garuda Squad holds a psychological edge, having defeated Thailand on penalties in the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup Final.
He is confident Indonesia can secure a result against Thailand. Even so, Japan and Qatar remain formidable opponents that cannot be underestimated. Both nations boast proven tournament experience and elite individual quality, requiring dedicated preparation and specific tactical planning from the Indonesian side.
Should the match order officially be adjusted, the coaching team will need to adapt their game plan accordingly for the first match. The core objective remains unchanged: accumulate as many points as possible to qualify for the Round of 16.
Ultimately, the postponement of the 2027 Asian Cup presents both significant opportunities and challenges for the Indonesia National Team. This nearly 11 month extension is a valuable asset to rehabilitate players, strengthen the squad, and deliver a higher standard of tournament preparation.
However, all of this will depend entirely on how effectively PSSI and the coaching staff capitalise on this window of opportunity. When the tournament finally kicks off in Saudi Arabia, Indonesia will still face an extremely difficult challenge.
All eyes now wait to see if the AFC will adjust the Group F match order to allow Indonesia to face Thailand first. Official confirmation will only come once the AFC releases the final revised tournament schedule.
