Brake Issues Caused Marc Marquez to Miss Out on a Podium Finish at the Austrian MotoGP Grand Prix

Marc Marquez had to endure a challenging race at the 2026 Austrian MotoGP. The Ducati Lenovo rider suffered braking issues that left him unable to maintain consistent performance throughout the event at the Red Bull Ring on Sunday, 20 September 2026.

These problems had already plagued Marquez from the very start of the race. This condition forced the seven-time world champion to struggle holding his race pace after starting from pole position.

"We had a very difficult week leading up to this. We prepared to push for faster race speed, but right from the first lap I encountered braking problems that made everything feel overwhelmingly hard, and stopped me from riding consistently," Marc Marquez stated, as quoted from the official Ducati Lenovo team page on Monday.

Instead of defending his lead, Marquez dropped multiple positions over the course of the grand prix. The Spanish rider eventually crossed the finish line in 5th place.

This final position came after Marquez could not keep pace with his rivals, including Pedro Acosta, Jorge Martin, Marco Bezzecchi, and Ai Ogura.

Despite missing out on a podium finish, Marquez still framed the Austrian result as part of Ducati Lenovo's evaluation process ahead of the next championship round.

"At the end of it all we secured fifth place and I am okay with that... We need to learn from the mistakes here, and keep preparing for the upcoming race at Motegi," the 93 rider added.

Marc Marquez Loses MotoGP Championship Lead

Finishing fifth at the Red Bull Ring also directly impacted Marquez's standing in the MotoGP world title race.

Jorge Martin took over the championship lead after finishing the Austrian grand prix in second place. This points haul brings Martin's total to 306 championship points.

Marquez now sits immediately behind him with 294 points, creating a 12 point gap between the two title contenders.

The championship battle will only intensify heading into the next round. After working through the challenges in Austria, Marquez will now turn his full focus to the Japanese MotoGP round at Motegi.

For Ducati Lenovo, the Austrian race result provides critical feedback for development. The braking issue experienced by Marquez has been flagged as a priority fix ahead of the next event.

With only 12 points separating the pair in the standings, the title fight between Marquez and Martin remains completely open, with every upcoming race result set to carry huge weight for the 2026 MotoGP world championship.
